- Studio 9.4 problem with avi capture.
- Posted by Fred Kasner on February 10th, 2007
I've been using "Dazzle" convertor to capture old tapes (Beta as well as
VHS) to preserve them to DVDs. When I first started things worked well
enough. The capture was to avi files. Then the edit was merely to xfer
the "scenes" to the edit (allowing some minor editing). Then the burning
to the DVD would compress as needed to fit the 4.7 GB disk. In some
cases there was no compression at all as the whole tape fit on the 4.7
GB disk. Then disaster stuck after a while.
I was unable to get the settings to capture to avi. I don't remember
what I did to undo the avi setting but it would by default want to save
to mpeg. This created a lousy poor definition DVD. Finally I figured out
how to reset the capture to avi again. But this is the real disaster.
Now I play the tape (the preview screen shows it is playing and reaching
the hard disk.) But there is no saving of an avi file whatsoever. A file
is created OK but it is always empty.
Help. Please.

FK,
Go to: http://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/read_threads.asp?
WebboardID=1&ForumID=1115&lng=1&SectionID=227 (watch out for line breaks!),
and ask your question. Make sure to list your equipment completely, HW, SW
(versions), video and drivers, HDDs, etc. That forum is dedicated to Studio v9
and they know the Dazzle HW/drivers. Give a complete account of your current
settings and, as here, what you have done, and what you wish to do. You will
get your answers, as that forum is specific to your SW & HW.

Thanks, I got the first part of the problem solved by means I do not
know. Tried rebooting and ran the program again and started pushing the
buttons. Your help will make this whole thing more systematic. Thanks
once again.

You know, it is almost worse, when we solve a problem, and do not know what we
did, or how the corrections were made. OTOH, solving a problem sure helps get
a project finished!
Glad you got part of it. I'll check in with the Studio 9 fora, and see what
the final answers were. I still have it on the laptop, and v10+, waiting in
the wings for install on a new workstation. Unfortunately, during an upgrade
from v10.5.2 to 10.6 caused a total systemic collapse. I had to have the
entire workstation re-built, cleaned up, with XP-Pro re-installed and have
been using Adobe Premiere Pro 2 (Production Studio) since. Now that Studio
10.7 seems to be working, I may build up enough courage to try again. Even
though APP2 does a nice job, there are a few times that Studio would be nice
to have on the system for "quick-n-dirty."
Good luck,
Hunt
