Trouble exporting DV video back to tape with Canon MV500i
Posted by stefan on March 22nd, 2006

Hello group,

I have a Canon MV500i which I use now for over three years. When I
bought it, the DVin was an important criterion for me, but I didn't use
it until now.
Now I have started to do some video editing and want to store the
result back on DV tape. But whatever I try, the Canon does not record
anything.

First attempt was Premiere 6.0. Device Control works fine, importing
the DV to computer works fine. When I try to do "Export to tape",
device control is working. I can see on the Canon display that it say
"Rec" and "DVin" and time code is running. I can hear the drive
running. But the screen remains blue and there is no progress in
Premiere. After some waiting I abort that and the Canon stops without
having recorded anything useful.

Next I tried Pinnacle Studio 7. Empty project, imported some short clip
from the camera, drag it into the timeline, write it to DV band. same
result.
Next I tried Windows Movie Maker. Same procedure, same result. The
Canon says recording but doesn't record any video or sound.

The camera is a MV500i, so the DVin should be enabled anyway. Are there
any specific settings within the camera that could be mixed up?
Did anybody experienced similar things?

Best regards,

Stefan

Check your settings as though you were going to export a new video file.
Export Timeline/Movie/Settings.

In General it should say -
File Type: Microsoft AVI,
Range: Entire Project.

Use the drop down to choose Video, this should say -
Compressor: Microsoft DV,
Depth: Millions,
Frame Size: 720x480 (if you are NTSC) or 720x576 (if you are PAL)
4:3 Aspect unchecked
Frame Rate: 29.97
Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV NTSC (0.9) or PAL (1.067)
Recompress: unchecked.

Use the drop down and choose Audio, this should say -
Rate: 48000 Hz
Format: 16 Bit-Stereo
Compressor: Uncompressed
Interleave: 1 Frame

If your settings for export do not match those for capture/import device
control WILL connect to your camcorder, because it is merely an ignorant
protocol which controls the mechanisms and not the flow of video output.
Whenever a signal is sent, naturally the control portion of your interface
will do what it is supposed to do by placing the camcorder in Record, Pause,
etc. If the video settings do not match the mechanism protocol does not know
that, and this is why you are getting the blue screen and nothing else
recorded to tape. Once all is matched across the board then you will get the
output you desire.

Hi Larry,

thanks for your response. I tried to follow your advice, but without
success. The fact that I have the same problem with different software
makes me doubt that it is actually a config problem. Pinnacle and Movie
Maker don't have that many options at all.
That's why I think it may be the camera.

Best regards,

Stefan

Stefan, look inside the camcorder menu for the AV-->DV setting. Not sure if
this may be related. Look for anything in the VCR, playback settings for DV
output related items. All the reviews I have read say DV In/Out. I tried to
look for the manual on the Canon UK site, and all they offer is the sale of
them through some Robert Scott person/company.

Read all the related pages concerning DV dubbing, etc. in your manual.
Perhaps there is something you are overlooking. It seems if the 1394 will
allow capture to the system the reverse should work fine. It's not often the
1394 link on the camcorder would simply go bad, unless there may have been a
time when you left it hooked to the system and hard booted the computer. But
then it would not allow input or output through the 1394.
