If I copy my analog tapes from my analog camcorder to a digital
camcorder, are the resulting tapes apt to be better quality because
they are now digital?

And if so, since I do not have either the iLink patch cord or a
firewire on my computer, can I run the tape through my Dazzle capture
gizmo to my computer and retain the better quality?

I know the cliche: garbage in, garbage out. But have read that
digitizing the analog tape via a good convertor can improve the
quality somewhat. And have read that the Sony camcorder with the
capability of converting the analog is superior to normal capture
cards.

Soooooooo! Original question, copying analog to digital using Sony
camcorder, then capturing using Dazzle gizmo to computer......will I
see an improvement? Or is it a waste of time and effort?

I will be trying it when I get an opportunity. But curious as to what
the general consensus is.

What is likely to happen is that capturing DV will throw away less of the
original data. Capturing with analogue is always a balance of data rate
versus acceptible quality, full analogue rate is something over 20 Mbps, DV
at 3.6 Mbps will look very similar to full stream analogue.

When I view my 11 year old tapes through my D8 camcorder they get digitised
to DV and I bring them in via Firewire, they look at least as good as I
played them 11 years ago.

So I guess the answer "may" be that you "may" see an improvement!!! The best
result will happen when you use a Hi8 or 8mm tape in a D8 camcorder, you may
get almost as good a result if you use the S-Video connector from device to
device.

You will have to try for yourself and see!

can't really improve.

BUT, it wont deteriorate as it would as analogue so converting to digital is
a good idea.

Quality will NEVER improve for the situation you described.
You goal is to minimize quality loss during digital conversion.
Most pass thru's from camcorders will have higher quality loss
than using a good convertor like Canopus's Advc1000

Buying the best digital camera that you can afford, along with proper
lighting
and a little experience is the best way to max out quality of digital video.
