- USB or PCI card for analog video capture?
- Posted by Daryl on April 19th, 2008
Hi Folks,
been doing some MiniDV capturing thru firewire, works great. But I have a
slew of old VHS and Hi8 tapes I would like to digitize sometime. Can
anyone recommend a not-too-pricey (say, under $200-$300) capture device,
preferably USB or FW that would convert analog signals to digital? Be nice
if inputs would cover both RCA and S-VIDEO.
I don't need any video editing software with this thing, I note that
Pinnacle offers some high-price solutions that include Premiere, etc. Have
lots of good video ed software.
thanks for any referrals or hints. esp helpful if you speak from
experience of having used some particular hardware that's well -configured..
thanks,
Daryl

I used a Sony DVMC-DA1 converter box for a few years.
It works perfectly for what you want to do. It takes RCA R
and L audio and composite picture in, plus "S"-video - and
sends out FW to the computer. It will also do the reverse
so you can watch your edited material from a timeline on a
TV. Perfect condition, with box, $175 plus $10 shipping in
US. Holler if interested.

If your miniDV camcorder has pass-through, I recommend using that.
Connect the analog camcorder's output to the DV camera's analog input,
set the DV 'corder up for pass-through, and capture over FireWire.
If your miniDV won't do that, maybe you could buy a used one that does.
It might work even if its deck is sick.

Apart from the Sony DVMC-DA1 converter mentioned earlier and noting
suggestion of getting an inexpensive miniDV with analog inputs for
passthrough, can membership here suggest what brands/models offer such
feature.
I am in sort of same canoe as OP, and my digital camcorder (Sony DCR-
PC1), although old (1998?) does not have analog inputs.
Thanks

A hardware capture/encoder is a big time saver.
I use an old Pinnacle box that ignores Macrovision. New ones
reportedly will not capture if Macrovision is detected, which can
happen in error on an old tape.
