- VideoRedo: cut video but keep audio?
- Posted by Terry Pinnell on September 24th, 2007
The following task is one I normally do quite easily with Womble MPEG
Video Wizard. But I'm sure I've seen it mentioned in forums and
newsgroups that VideoRedo can do it. But so far I haven't succeeded
(with VideoRedo Plus).
Having noticed a flaw in a home made DVD, I want to remove a 10 second
section. That's easy enough of course. I presumably just insert the
DVD, open the appropriate VOB in VideoRedo Plus in Cut mode, remove
the offending section, and use Save As. But I obviously don't want a
gap in the *music track*.
With Womble, I would
1) Drag a copy of the entire VOB to the audio track timeline
2) Cut out the video section
3) Mute the sound in the entire video track
4) Save
(Then re-author, as I don't believe that can be avoided?)
Just in case that's not clear, here's an illustration:
Original, where XX = video to be removed, v = video and a = audio
vvvvvvvvvvvXXxvvvvvvvvvvvv
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Required result, with full audio
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
(The extra 10 seconds of audio at the end of the video is no problem.
I can either let it fade out, or cut it off the start and fade in.)
Any VideoRedo user able to tell me what steps I need to follow to
achieve this please?

You should post in this VideoReDo forum. People, in there, are helpful
and quick.

Just open the vob then "Save As" "Elementary streams (mpv)".
Delete the .mpv file.
Rename the .mpa or .ac3 file by adding one letter, that you will
remove later to get the proper name back.
Open the .vob again and remove your 10sec then "Save As"
"Elementary streams (mpv)", again.
Delete the new .mpa or ac3 file just made.
Remove the letter you added to the old .mpa or .ac3 file,
restoring it to its original name.
Now you have your audio and video as Elementary Stream
formatted files and of the lengths you are asking for. You
can use them in your authoring program, as they are and
most of them should be able to handle the different lengths
in some fashion or another. It might not be the way you
want though, (TDA just cuts off any extra audio at the end.)
From your post I get the impression that lip sync isn't an
issue, background music I guess. If it was you would need
to address that, but then there would be no point in trying
to keep the audio in place when you removed the video.
(You would just have removed the audio that goes with the
removed video, as is the normal practice.)
It would be a good idea to add your trims and fades, as
you mentioned, by working on the .mpa or .ac3 file, so
you might want to keep track of the time codes, if you
want to make the adjustments around the point you
removed the video. (From your post, I take it you don't)
Luck;
Ken

Great, thanks Ken, I was sure it could be done somehow. In the
VideoRedo forum I was told yesterday "You cannot accomplish this with
VideoReDo alone."
I'll have a go at it tomorrow.
