- VLC taking over some file associations
- Posted by Terry Pinnell on February 10th, 2008
Anyone here familiar with VLC please? It has taken over various file
associations I had mainly assigned to Media Player Classic, such as
..WMV, .ASX, .MPEG and .MP4. Oddly, using Open With, selecting Media
Player and checking 'Always use...' doesn't fix this. And in VLC
itself I can see no section for assigning File Associations.

I have found where the VLC Icon seems to get
itself associated, but a look at the file's properties
shows that "Opens with:" is associated with a
different player (MPC, for me as well). The "Type
of file:" listed is "VLC media file", but its double-
click response is to launch and play with MPC.
Sometimes updating and/or installing different
software makes unnoticed small changes to the XP
associations and naming settings. My system gets
these features fiddled with, a lot. As long as it
launches the right program, I seldom bother with
fixing the naming or Icon used.
Luck;

Thanks Ken. Here, it was a bit of a mess. AVI was as you describe,
opening in VirtualDub but showing VLC icon. Yet others, like WMV
appeared to be trying to open in VLC. Anyway, I hacked around in File
Types, eventually resorting to the non-intuitive use of the advanced
button to *Restore* VLC, then changing it from there. Also tidied up
the icons and 'Type' descriptions.
Situation is complicated in my case because I use a program called
OpenExpert which lets me open files with many more progs than the
built in 'Open With' (limited I think to 8?). For example, I can open
MPG types with 17 progs.
