WARNING!!! Avoid Sharp DVD players!
Posted by Ixnei on August 25th, 2003

An experience I had with them, related to their defective DV-740 units.
Hoaky as hell business practices, clearly bordering on unethical in
behavior.

Posted to area450.com as well.

Well,

I guess that silence in your case certainly speaks louder than words. In
my investigation of the skipping/pausing/stuttering problem related to
this DV-740 model, it became very obvious to me <IMMEDIATELY> that a known
manufacturing defect in the dvd loader mechanism was the cause of
<WIDESPREAD> field failures, as evidenced by the mere fact that your
technical support WEB page specifically mentions this model *DV-740* and
the path to take for its problems!!! Certainly a manufacturing debacle
tantamount to the pentium chip bugs/recalls (but of course, we >both< know
you made no attempt to recall any potentially known defective batches from
your distributors/retailers - the batch I bought sat in a warehouse for
almost 1 year before *I* bought it). I used to work in the field of
quality/reliability, so I am familiar with typical processes involved in
legitimate semiconductor industry practice, when it comes to problem
material quarantine and disposition.

At any rate (and as not to become so longwinded as to have already been
sent flying to the WASTEBASKET , I was wondering if it would be possible
to simply obtain a replacement dvd loader, and do the manual labor myself?
I am quite familiar with PC hardware, and have been building boxes since
8088's were cloned. I could even pick a loader up from the closest local
Sharp (or should I say Sampo?) repair facility, and leave behind the
defective one. I'm sure my Mother wouldn't mind *EVENTUALLY* getting back
that DVD Christmas present I gave to her 8 months ago, that's evidently
still under some sort of implied warrantee...
