- Warning ! - Nero 7 Nero 7 Ultra Edition ENHANCED
- Posted by Smarty on September 20th, 2006
I made the mistake of installing the recently announced / released
"Enhanced" version of Nero 7, which was advertised to current Nero 7 owners
via e-mail yesterday. This is a no-cost upgrade with a number of new
functions / features.
Much to my dismay, the new version has caused all sorts of problems on the
machine I installed it, including slow downs, programs which no longer load,
and no obvious improvements in the area claimed which most interested me (HD
DVD burning).
It is a total mess in my opinion. As has been the case in recent Nero
upgrades, there are way too many issues and problems which somehow go
undetected by the software publisher (Ahead). I have unquestionably set
myself back with this upgrade, and the kindest way of describing it would be
a downgrade.
I wonder if anyone else has had similar experiences or if my situation is
unique.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I installed the upgrade onto all 4 (four) computers in my home, and none of
them were adversely affected.
Don't know what caused your issue, but with my four machines (2 desktops and
2 notebooks) of different vintages and configurations, it is apparent that
it is *NOT* the fault of the upgrade. Maybe your download was corrupt...did
you do an MD5 checksum on the file?

NoNoBadDog,
Thanks very much for replying. I installed it on another machine here and
also found no slow-downs or other hangs / crashes, so there must be some
problem specific to the machine I used originally. The same download was
used in both cases to make an installer disk.
Now I need to figure out how to get the upgrade to work properly on the
machine I use every day.......
Thanks again,
Smarty

Just like Smarty, it screwed up my computer BIG TIME! I deleted the friggin'
thing and went back to the prior version. All is well again.

It's extremely obvious that the latest Nero is the culprit since I can
remove it and my problems disappear, and I can reinstall it and the problems
reappear. I have ***NEVER*** installed a video editing / burning package
before which screwed up so many things including my Outlook email program,
which refuses to run when Nero (latest version) is installed. Reverting to
the prior Nero version and all is o.k. again. I have often seen codec and
burner driver conflicts and "InCD" and other packet writing conflicts, but
cannot imagine why my email program breaks.....
I have had Nero on this and other machines for at least 5 years now, and
they have a pathetic history of releasing poorly tested software. This
latest release absolutely takes the cake in my opinion as the buggiest
release ever in terms of stability issues.
And remarkably, on another machine I have here it seems to run fine.........

Which begs the obvious question....
if you think Nero has a "pathetic history of releasing poorly tested
software", why on earth did you continue to use it for 5 years?

I'll jump in here. Nero does things that the others don't and so it's an
essential. But if you cross paths with the problems due to using those
features, then you will just have to say it -- a "pathetic history of
releasing poorly tested software". I can't think of a better description.
You just thank heavens if you can work around the problems and still do what
you need to do.
At least they keep updating it. Though the updates can foul things up.

I have used Nero for at least 5 years myself. I generally have at least 4
computers in my home at any given time, sometimes more. In all the years I
have used Nero, I have always kept whatever version I was using updated. In
the years I have used it. I have never, not once, had a single issue with it
slowing down my computers. I can remember only one significant problem,
about 2 years ago or so, when an update caused an issue on a computer that
had an ATI All-in-Wonder video card...the capture function would not work.
That is the only issue I have had on any machine I have ever put it on. So,
based upon my own experience, my perspective is just the opposite.

I like their burner software very much, and it was / is one of the few and
very first on the PC to offer HD-DVD and BluRay support. I suffer the
problems with it to allow me to do things I can otherwise not do on the PC.
Also, it eventually gets updated with fixes, and eventually works properly.
I guess I consider it to be the price of admission to the 'early adopters'
community.
