What program can cut WMV movies without reencoding?
Posted by Michel on July 22nd, 2004

Can anyone tell me what programs can edit WMV-movie-files and just
cutout the parts I want, without reencoding it. This saves a lot of
time and keep exactly the same quality.

For MPG I use MyFlix and for AVI's I use VirtualDub to cut out the
parts I want to keep without reencoding them. But it seems VirtualDub
may not handel WMV's because of Microsoft copyrights.

Thanks

Windows Movie Maker 2 (free update from ms), if you run XP.
If you don't have XP, then look around the tools section at:

Sorry - missed the 'without reencoding' bit. Can't be done AFAIK.

Theoretically any video editing application could edit WMV
*IF* there were a 2-way codec available for it. But since there
doesn't seem to be, you may be outta luck trying to edit WMV.
WMV is a pretty good release codec, but was never intended
for editing. How did these things get into WMV to start with?
can't you edit BEFORE WMV encoding?

There is a version of VirtualDub that works with WMV files. I think
you'll find it here.

I tried it but couldn't play the converted WMV to AVI files!
It's seems to be a buggy program!
Thanks though

Well it doesn't
Seems I need a very old version of VirtualDub. I tried that one and
it's so old that it can't read modern WMV files.

So I'm still looking for a WMV-cutting or converting program without
the time-wasting RE-coding....

If you run the cut up WMV video through AsfTools Basic Repair you may find
it works!

As posted Easy Video Splitter can cut up WMV video - but when i used it i
found that the cut up WMV video had problems and wouldn't play on my mobile
phone.
I used AsfTools to perform a basic repair and the videos then played fine on
my mobile phone.
