- What is 'System ASPI'?
- Posted by Terry Pinnell on June 11th, 2005
I'm a DVD and Nero novice, so would appreciate some help understanding
this please. If I use the Nero Info Tool, under the ASPI tab there's a
drop down box with two entries: System ASPI, and Nero ASPI, which
respectively show the following details when selected:
Nero ASPI
---------
File Version Length Date
----- ------- ------------ ----------------
Nero ASPI
WNASPI32.DLL 2.0.1.74 164112 bytes October 26, 2004
"ASPI is installed and working properly"
System ASPI
------------
WnASPI32.dll n/a 126464 bytes January 12, 2005
"ASPI file(s) are missing"
How do I interpret this please? Should I take some action (what?) to
install these missing System ASPI files?
Apart from some problems with one of the programs I use, MemoriesOnTV
(arising I'm 99% sure from a bug), all my 'DVD stuff' seems to be
working OK. I can play DVDs with various players, such as PowerDVD and
Nero ShowTime, and write DVDs with Nero Express.
Any advice would be much appreciated please.

Many CDR and DVDR programs add their own layers of drivers
when the system ones are missing or whatever. Sounds like
everything is fine and you are picking at nits.

It worries me that I might at some future stage, inevitably when I can
ill afford to do the research, I might find my system unable to work
with DVD, due to these 'missing' files.
To paraphrase Tony Hancock's blood donor sketch, "It may be only a nit
to you, but it's life and death to some people!"

Windows 2000 and Windows XP, which you are probably using one of, do not
come with an ASPI layer installed. Thus Nero uses the APSPI layer that
it provides itself.
As Richard said, "If it ain't broke, don't attempt to fix it."

Perhaps Terry Pinnell is a fan of my favorite bumper sticker: "If it
ain't broke, break it".
I saw it a couple of years ago (on a bumper, of course).

More precisely -- if it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is.
When fixing it -- tighten it 'til it strips, then back off a
quarter turn.

Thank you for the lessons beyond Break-It 101.
Maybe now I can finally advance past my beginner status :-)
