What's the verdict on Progressive Scan from Interlaced Video
Posted by Pat on February 19th, 2004

I'm backing up my Laserdiscs (Canopus: Capture) and wondering if I should
try to create Progressive Scan DVDs rather than Interlaced. My TV has the
ability to display anamorphic, Progressive Scan DVDs.

At the risk of sounding flippant: Try it progressive, interlaced, anamorphic,
16:9...whatever you can create. Then burn on DVD/RWs and choose the
best-looking technique. IAW: The "best", "correct", way is the way that looks
best.

Yeah, but I have read lots of mixed opinion about even trying to make
progressive out of interlaced video. This is not film mode source, its 29.97
FPS video being captured over Firewire. Surely, there must be a pecking
order of the best tools for de-interlacing and then creating PS scan MPEG-2.

I'd vote that the DVD player would do the best at converting from interlace to
progressive. As said, do some testing and see what looks best. Then let us
know. ;-)

I agree wiuth the test idea. I had conflicting opinions on soem settings, so
I took a 2 minute clip that I new what it looked like form my DV cam to the
TV, and encoded many mpg versions, authored them and looked at them. I could
see diffreences in smoothness and quality, hence I ended uo with my really
good template. YIu should do the same for your Progressive issue

I thought that the best solution would be to De-Interlace and then Sharpen,
then create Progressive Scan MPEG-2 file. Virtual Dub and AviSynth seem to
have filters and commands that handle this. Of course, experimentation is
what I always do. I was just looking for opinion on which filters to use.
Bob and Weave seems to be the one that gest the most hype.
