will dvds play ok on usb 1.1 external drive?
Posted by Alan on October 7th, 2004

I'm thinking of getting an external usb dvd drive so I can play dvds
on my laptop. But the laptop's usb interface is 1.1 (or whatever the
old standard is)and I wonder if the data throughput is sufficient to
handle the dvd stream.

Thanks

Good question.. Not sure. The data rate of 1.1 is maxed at 12Mbit/sec.
Suppose your DVD is 7 to 9 .. I'd say it is possible but I haven't ever
tried it. Usually USB devices do not operate at the edges of the spec
bandwidth. If the driver for that device does isochronous transfers , ie..
streams with little handshaking, It may work ok.

drive when connected to the OP's notebook...because the notebook has a USB 1.1
interface.

If the OP's notebook also has a '1394 interface, that is the way to do it. If
not, look for a USB2.0+1394 PCMCIA ("PCCARD") adaptor.
