WinTV hanging up XP
Posted by sdeyoreo@hotmail.com on October 24th, 2004

I just put in a new WinTV GO, works for a bit, then picture freezes,
audio continues. If I try to close it, things go back and XP ends up
unresponsive and, in the end, won't shut down. I need to hit reset
button, then on restart, everythings ok, WinTV stars up again, but in
a while freezes and then it's the same all over again.
I have P4 @ 3.0 Ghz, Hyperthreading, two 512MB DDR in dual channel,
dual SATA in RAID0, Intel PERL865 mobo, ATI video card.
Any help? Haven't tried latest drivers from Hauppauge yet.
BTW, it seems there's alot of 3rd party sw for Hauppauge tvs, any good
links?

Have you checked within Device Manager to see if the card is sharing IRQ
with some other device that is causing this hang? If you are unfamiliar go
to Control Panel, click System, then click the Hardware tab and choose
Device Manager. Highlight the top item in the list, which is the computer
proper. Then from the View menu choose Devices by connection, and then IRQ.
Look through the list and see what is sharing with what if anything.

It may be necessary to change the slot the WinTV card is in. Just because
you have a free slot on your mainboard doesn't necessarily mean a particular
card is going to work in that very slot. You may need to do some shuffling
around in order to make it work properly. All the WinTV GO drivers for the
card with either the 878 or 881 chip at the Hauppauge site are dated June
2004. If you purchased the card recently you most likely have that very
driver, which would rule out this being a driver issue. From where I sit it
sounds like an IRQ issue.

Good luck,

Thanks for your reply. If I"View-Resources by connection" and expand
IRQ,. Huappage shows up as: " (PCI) 10 Hauppauge Win TV". Nothing is
listed as (PCI) 10. I bought the card new from VCompUsa yesterday.
I went for the WinTV because it seemed there is alot of 3rd party s/w
for it; ATI TV card reportedly doesn't work with Hyperthreading, and
PCTV looked like bad reviews.
Thanks again.

Think this is a Windows XP problem (recall finally finding an obscure
reference on www.microsoft.com for what sounds like a nearly identical
problem a friend was having with his TV card - different brand tho). I'd
suggest installing service pack 2 and seeing if it works ok after that
(since it contains all the updates) and it wouldn't hurt to have the latest
graphics card drivers installed.

You might swap it into a different PCI slot.

Again, you may want to swap PCI slots. If two thing are sharing an IRQ XP
can and will create a virtual IRQ for the shared item. Not saying that is
what you are experiencing but you cannot depend on the idea that your chosen
slot is going to work no matter what, while you continue to think it can be
working with just another driver update. To properly tech out a problem you
have to exhaust every possible substitute for the present set up. It's a bit
of work, and definitely a pain in the butt BUT if you want it to work you
gotta do it.

Find out now for sure, and if it just won't work get your money back. Go now
and get your money back, buy something else, put it in that same slot and
you may find the new thing won't work either. Bad hardware, poor driver for
XP, or just plain user error? Sorry if this sounds rough, but that's the
reality of working with computer systems.

Install the latest drivers from Hauppauge as well as the latest wintv2000.

Then, make sure you have the latest Direct X installed. I had lots of
problems until I did that- all was suggested by Hauppauge tech support
and was good advice.

Turns out to be hyperthreading. The WinTV works fine with
hyperthreading disabled. Same problem, reported on various newsgroups,
steered me away from ATI. Didn't find any such reports before I bought
WinTV, though. Went into BIOS, disabled hyperthreading and no
problems.
Thanks to all for the effort.

It might be worth trying the alternative drivers at:

http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/

"This is a total rewrite of the reference drivers so I was able to solve
some of the main problems it had, such as to support quite a bit more
capture cards, make NetMeeting work with it, add lots of analog video
standards, make it more stable, improve ACPI support, hibernate, AVI
capture, frame size, FM and AM radio for those cards that have it, lower
the CPU usage, support hardware overlay flipping, etc... Take a look at
the source code to see if you can recognize it as the reference driver
it was!"
