WMM won't recongnize VideoReDo .mpg files
Posted by allr1@webtv.net on April 27th, 2008

I'm using a trial version of VideoReDo
to convert Video recorded to DVD.

The coverted files are .mpg. When I
try to have WMM import them, they
aren't seen by it. (I do this so I can
edit them further in WMM)

My WMM isn't the newest, so I'm
assuming it isn't able to handle that
file type, i.e. .mpg.

Is that assumption correct?

Or maybe I need to enable WMM to
recognize .mpg? (the WMP plays
them w/o a problem)

From what little I understand, .mpg
is called 'streaming mpeg'. Is this
different than standard mpeg? (I
convert it at 'Mpeg 1' quality)

AND, one last question.

Someone, answering another question
about .vob files, suggested that I rename
the file. (so WMM would recognize it)

Is that done using the 'rename' menu
option? (after right clicking w/mouse)

Is it just a matter of adding .avi to the
name when doing this?

The problem isn't with VideoReDo's .mpg files, but with
how your system and/or WMM is setup to work with
MPEG and/or the audio codec involuved.

There is also a link to get the latest version of WMM on theat page.

WMV or DV-AVI. The point being that your WMM edited
video may need to be re-encoded, depending on what use you
have for it.

Ken, if the OP was running Vista, it comes with Movie Maker HD which
does have DVD burning as one of it's features.

Ah so, well that would be different. I'm still staying
with XP, I don't find Vista that attractive, yet.

Thank's for the heads up.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

That's what I figured. :-(

I use webtv.net for the web, but I've about
had enough, so I should be able to get the
latest version once I get a computer online.
(thanks for the link)

Is the latest version WMM at the link free?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I'm mainly uploading video, shot with a
miniDV camcorder, to YouTube.com.

But I have some video shot with an
older Hi-8 camcorder that I recorded
onto a DVD with a stand-alone DVD
recorder.

That's what I needed a DVD ripper
for.

The trail version of VideoReDo won't
convert any more than a few minutes.
(at a time, very limited editing too)

I'm somewhat pleased with VideoReDo,
so I may bit the bullet and just get the
full version.

Thanks for your reply.

Both my computers run XP, and neither
one of them has a DVD burner.

I may get an external DVD burner. Then
I should be able to convert & edit DVD's
using the software that comes with it.
