*** KERNEL-MODE DRIVER FRAMEWORK 1.0 RELEASE ***
Posted by Eliyas Yakub [MSFT] on December 3rd, 2005

Redmond, WA, December 2, 2005 - Microsoft releases the Kernel-Mode Driver
Framework Version 1.0

Today, Microsoft releases the Kernel-Mode Driver Framework (KMDF) - a new
model for driver development - for the Microsoft® Windows® family of
operating systems.

The initial release of the Kernel-Mode Driver Framework is now available at
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/default.mspx

KMDF is part of Microsoft's new driver model, the Windows Driver Foundation
(WDF). WDF includes frameworks for developing kernel-mode and user-mode
drivers, along with test and verification tools to help ensure that these
drivers actually work.

KMDF is a customizable driver infrastructure that implements code for common
driver requirements, such as power management and Plug and Play, and defines
intelligent defaults. KMDF frees driver writers to focus on their device
hardware, rather than the intricacies of the operating system.

This release of KMDF is for Windows XP and Windows 2003. Microsoft is
actively pursuing solutions that will allow us to make KMDF available on
Windows 2000.

As someone noticed in the kernel newsgroup, this KMDF download
contains the whole win2k3 DDK. This is really amazing after all debates why
they don't let you download the DDK.

What about the framework source? What about the framework docs - are they
similar in quality to the DDK docs?

this web release does not include source. it is a free download, you can
check out the quality of the docs and send feedback where you think it needs
improvement.
