SCSI Pass-Through And User Rights?

Does SPTI require Administrator rights on Windows 2003 Server? Is there a
Microsoft document available that makes this clear? I am looking at this
from a tape drive perspective (SPTI -> tape driver installed vs. no tape
driver).

Follow-up.

This quote from MSDN is causing the confusion.

"Applications do not require administrative privileges to send a
pass-through request to a device, but they must have read-write access to the
device."

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...656ad0.xml.asp

I was always under the impression that SPTI required Admin rights. How is
read-write access acheived? Once again I am trying to access a tape drive.

Thanks!

Different device classes have different acls. CDROM for example allows
non-admins to do passthroughs, but this is the exception. The ACLs on tape
require admin privilege.

Hello Jeff,

Thank you for the reply and clarification. Is there a document or web page
where this is stated? The quote I mentioned below is causing confusion and I
need something official that states that admin rights are necessary for
specific devices such as tape drives.

Thanks!
