Are there any wireless drivers for vista yet ?
Posted by Wardy on August 19th, 2006

I have been relatively happy with vista thus far apart from 1 major thing ...

Where's all the wireless support ???

I can get my Netgear wireless card to recognise and install with vista but
it always shows that there is no cable plugged in ... bit odd for a wireless
device.

I have been looking all over the place for drivers and I do not intend to
continue using vista without being able to use it for everything I normally
would.

The current release does need a lot of work and in places can be confusing
but features I found particularly good included ...

the new way it handles my media (mp3, avi, jpg, ect)

I develop web projects and found that IIS was missing but it seems to run
fine with the visual studio 2005 web server.

As expected a new look and much more to play with was included in the
interface but why add more to a tried and tested perfectly fine interface.
The extras in the interface should be optional not a requirement.

I like the fact that the word "Start" was replaced with just a windows logo
in some versions ... everyone knows where start is now and this is a nice way
to tidy up the interface that tiny bit more.

But back to my original request ....

Wireless in particular failed for me and yes it is very early to be
expecting a full set of drivers but perhaps something generic would work for
now ???

My development means i use the framework a lot does this new way of thinking
include the back end ???

will my applications be able to get what they need from the hardware and is
this going to be better for me as a developer or is the system just more
complex as is usually the case with something new ???

There is the WDK sample driver. It can run on the COMPUSA 54 Mbps Wireless G
PCI Adapter (SKU 333618). There is also a Vista in-box driver for this one,
so you don't have to use the DDK driver.

I believe that there are Vista drivers for some of the newer Intel built-in
notebook adapters. Look for 3945 Mini PCI Express. (I have not tried this
one yet...).
Good luck,

Internally, the wireless card is considered to be "no cable plugged in" if
there is no current association to the AP.

Open the wireless connections control panel, and try to associate to some AP
nearby.

Thanx for the input guys.

the device shows as being setup in the device manager but for some reason
there seems to be no way of attaching the device to an AP ...

is this an incomplete feature in vista ?
