Seeing that no one responded, I struck out on my own and fixed the problem.
First, let me restate the problem.
I tried installing ZT2: ZC but it wouldn't launch so I tried re-intalling it
to see if it would run better. I used the uninstall option but it failed, so
I tried manually uninstalling all the files and swept my registry with
Registry Mechanic. When I try to install ZT2: ZC it keeps trying to
uninstall it. When I choose the "uninstall" option I get a pop up saying
something about error 1316 and a problem with the file
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\Zoo Tycoon 2-Zookeeper Collection.msi
The ISSUE: the problem is that my uninstall failed to clear some registry
values pertaining to Zoo Tycoon 2. I noticed this by running RegEdit and
doing a search on the string 'Tycoon'. This brought up many references to
Zoo Tycoon 2 registry keys (sorry if that's not the right word) including the
offending 'Zoo Tycoon 2-Zookeeper Collection.msi' . Just to be safe I did a
search on a software title I knew I had successfully uninstalled to see if
there were differences -- and in fact there were. Many Zoo Tycoon 2 entries
had been left over. So here's what I did.
First, re-ran Registry Mechanic to minimize the work I might need to do.
Then I backed up my Registry (using System Restore). Finally I ran RegEdit
and went through and deleted all folders/keys that referenced Zoo Tycoon 2.
QUALIFIER: I made sure that I only deleted a folder that referenced Zoo
Tycoon 2 and NOT any parent folder. This some times meant a sub-folder or
two was deleted, but there was no problem. In the end, I probably ended up
deleting 3 or 4 things total (leaving things like the .ztc folder since I was
sure that didn't have anything to do with the problem). Once that was done,
the problem was fixed.
Given that I'm no more than a mere novice at this stuff, I can't say this is
the most efficient method. But it worked!
