okay, I have a 2nd job interview at a certain company tomorrow at 11:00am. when I go there tomorrow I'll be there for an hour and they're going to 'test' my autocad skills. the company isn't an architecture firm, they're more on the engieering side of things, property & project management... the guy I met with today showed me his computer screen and it showed a site plan, with the footprint of a building, and their job was to add in the ground elevations, and sewers etc.

so, based on the description of the job [see below] that i've applied for, and the type of company, what kind of things do you think they'll 'test' me on??? It's not that I'm afraid that I won't be able to do whatever they ask, but I just want some idea of what to expect...

if anyone can help me out, give me some ideas, i'd greatly appreciate it!!!

I have over 2 years training in CAD and 3+ years work experience. I can say
that the "test" will probably be just a testing on how well you know
commands. Maybe how fast you are (don't try to rush and make mistakes) By
the ad it looks like they are taking students, so im sure you will get
training. Just know your basic commands and you should be fine.

Have you posted this question to the alt.cad.autocad newsgroup, too?
They may be able to give you some additional insight.
Good luck with the job prospect.

And instead of the alt.architecture group, post to an engineering group or
two. The spelling will be horrendous, but you should get some great advice
from those guys. :-)

Know how to correctly scale a drawing from decimal feet to architectual units and back.

If you are in model sapce and need to convert an engineering drawing created with decimal feet as the primary unit to architectual feet and inches; change the drawing units to archtecttual feet and inches in the drawing setup dialogue, select all, scale, select 0,0 as the base point, and give 12 as the factor. To go the other way, change to decimal feet in the setup dialogue, repete the same steps as before but enter 1/12 as the scale factor.

Try to get familiarized with basic layer mgmt, paper and model space, and view ports... Those would be helpful for a firm that is looking for the description given below.

the 'test' is only for an hour, and they seem quite genuine, even offering
to pay more if i'm good.
damn, if i got 11 bucks and hour, just for turing on a computer i'd be
rich!!!!

thanks, i guess it's just cuz i'm nervous, and i really need/want this job, that i'm freaking out about this...

i've worked at an architecture firm before, so it won't be totally new to me, and i'm a fast learner and catch on quick, so i think it will go okay...

"Brain Fuel Media" <nospam@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:RaHKa.293505$3C2.8230469@news3.calgary.shaw.c a...
Hello.

The test probably won't be very hard, but you will have to know some basic autocad commands and concepts.

I would get familiar with: lines, polylines, chamfer, array, xrefs, paper space, setting up a plot, plotting to file, and layer commands. There are literally thousands of other commands, but a civil-engineering firm, as an architecture firm, probably won't use more than 100. The only other computer related skill I can see is knowledge of 3D modelling in autocad.

Seeing as they are a civil-engineering firm, they might want you to know something about water shedding on a site, and maybe a very basic knowledge of soil dynamics (depending on who their main client is).

Hope that helps.

Ryan
