During the exam, the man says, "Doc, I think I'm insane."
Puzzled, the doctor retorts, "What makes you think that?"
Without missing a beat, the man replies, "Because my socks told me I am."
After pondering his patient for a minute, the doctor says, "Both of them?"

That reminds me of a character in a "The Tick" based game I ran for some
friends. One of the players created a character named "Mr Smarty-Pants",
whose "pants were smarter than he was". The way the player played the
character, it was never clear on if his pants actually talked to him, of
if the character was just insane. Here's one of the excerpts from the
game:
Mr. Smartypants: My character, Mr. Smartypants, is a complete idiot, but
he talks to his pants, which are super-intelligent. And his pants tell
him….
Gm: His pants tell him to do things?
Stevebot 5k: The voices tell me to burn things! (ala Simpsons)
Mr. Smartypants: (seriously) No, not the voices. The voices are for
crazy people. It's the pants. I don't see why people don't understand
it. These are my pants; they're not voices, it's not my dog, it's my
pants. I'm not crazy!
