Burn Out
Posted by Brian Mays on June 28th, 2003

So what do you do when you feel burned out creatively? I think I may have
reached this point. Production-wise I'm good--but I've noticed in the last
few weeks my creative has really slowed down more than I'm comfortable with.
It's like at times I'm feeling around blindly in a dark room for *anything*
to go with.

Suggestions?

Some things I'm considering doing:
- Projects for pleasure (i.e. Flash games, cartoons like Turnabout)
- Yardwork
- Rearranging the home/office environment
- Getting out of the home as much as possible with other people
- Been working out, playing softball
- Trying to read more varied material
- Trying to be more social than I have been :-)

Thanks,
Brian

I know perfectly what you're talking about. When I'm working really
hard and I need to design a lot of stuff in a short amount of time,
quality gets lower and lower and I need more time to do great stuff.

The only remedy is to take off. It doesn't matter how long, but what
matters is that you get out of your usual environment so that you
forget about everything like work, home,... Go camping a few days, do
a citytrip, whatever... but don't touch the computer or pencils...

Another good remedy is to let you influence by a play, art work,... so
go to exhibitions, a play or maybe the local opera house? You'll see
things in a different way after these influences.

Another thing you could do is take initiative and organise something.
A barbeque, a party at home, a picknick in the forest or a day at the
beach. Get your phone and call some friends...

The most creative things I ever designed were always done the days
after I came back from a long holiday. But we don't have time to go on
holiday so often...

Hope this helps,

Barton

This is what I'm leaning toward doing. I need to tread water a bit until I
either work out of this or am able to get the time to get away.

Thanks,

If you can't spend 10 days in Cancun, do some things to break up your normal
routine. Move your schedule around. Take a different route to work. Eat at
the cafe counter instead of a booth. Work out at 8 p.m. instead of 8 a.m.
Above all, change/eliminate/ignore the things in life that bother you. That
generally frees up some headspace!

Brian,

If you can, take a couple weeks off and take a road trip ...

Change of scenery, road trip fun, some hijinks ..etc.

Good suggestions, thanks. My getaway time may come toward the end of next
month. In the meantime I can do some small weekend getaways here in the
state. I've planned for awhile to hit some of the lesser known attractions
in Oklahoma, and some that I just haven't hit yet. Like a new state
aquarium that opened up about 90 miles from me.

Next year I'm planning a road trip to a large city...possibly San Francisco,
since I've been there twice but just got the tip of the iceberg as it was a
business trip. Going to take a large group of my closest friends this time.

I did start the workout change, interestingly enough, about 5 months ago.
Went from the morning, where I was rushed to get done in time to be to work
on time, to doing it immediately after work. It helps get the stress and
frustrations out that way.

I can no longer eat cheese. :-(

(I do, however, sneak a little feta from time to time.)

Listen to Chick Corea and Michael Brecker trading bars on Spain, and be
happy that I don't have to be that spontaneaously creative, listen to Joe
Zawinul Syndicate hammer out electric jazz, listen to Dee Dee Bridgewater
"Speak Love", listen to Christian McBride make a bass do things it
shouldn't, listen to Harold Mayburn play some old-fashioned rocking
blues.....Oh, wait that is what I did today. Let me
check.............................Yup, I'm inspired creatively. There is
something about a day of live jazz.

I think this afternoon I'm just going to go and sit in my backyard and do
some reading...some book that I've been procrastinating reading. Maybe that
Sherlock Holmes book that's been setting around for awhile.
