Can you be good at graphic design if you're bad at drawing
Posted by Bradley Burton on October 8th, 2006

I'm thinking of going into graphic design for video games as my major,
but i'm terrible at drawing. Will that mean that I'll also be bad at
graphic design?

Not really. the good drawers are now illustrators.

most GD's just doodle unless you're doing illustration type work then a
solid basis of shape, form, perspective etc is required and easily
picked up in life drawing classes & similar.

I am studying GD but can't draw a line! It makes the assignments tough
when you are struggling with what you think is a great idea out of your
head into something to turn in.

No. I think that if you could draw good you'll have a skill more helping
yourself like designer, like if you be good at photographer, but drawing
is not the skill one for a graphic designer. Anyway... if you can,
improve drawing, you can only have advantages from it!
Sorry for my bad english!

Yes...not in the way that other people have related it though. The
thing about drawing is that it's not really some magical skill that
some people have and some people don't, it's learned. You practice,
you learn techniques, you develop your own techniques, it's a constant
evolutionary process.

Now...you don't *have* to be great at drawing to be a graphic
designer, but if you have so little interest in art that you never
bothered to take the time to develop your skill in drawing (or other
similar art forms)...it's highly unlikely that you'll have enough
interest to ever become ~truly~ good at graphic design because of how
they're so closely related.

Whether it's 3D character models for games or drawing a figure on
paper...in either form you need the same basic principles and
concepts. The means by which you use to create the subject differ,
but in either form you need to have an understanding of say proportion
so that you don't wind up with a character that's too short, has a
giant head and dwarven looking hands.

To me, the more I learn about graphic design...the better I become at
drawing. Because most of the skills and techniques I learn in graphic
design can be applied to drawing.

hum graphic design for video games? that's a big field you are trying
to cover there there's the concept developer the 3d modler and texture
people and that's not even go into details. so if you want to be any of
these positions YES you need to know how to draw. if you can't draw
then you might be lack of attention to detail to still lifes so texture
position is out. then if you can't draw how are you going to come up
with a new character? then concept developer, if you don't know do the
shaps and forms and movements on paper how do you think doing it on
computer in 3d software will be a easier task. i'm just simply saying
that Drawing is not hard, don't limit yourself to "i don't do paper and
pen" try to keep a sketch book and ddo sketchs all the time and you
will be shocked how well you will become

maya or #D max or have become art directors/creative directors ...were
much better if they could draw well.

the ones that drew like crap, become very efficient with the tools on
computer but seeemd to never reach the talent that the ones that drew
well and learned the tools on computer too.
