A newbie question. A lot of websites have a copyright statement at
the bottom of their page. Here's an example:
Copyright 2004. All rights reserved. All trademarks and logos are
properties of their respective owners.
Does the site actually have to do something before putting a statement
like this one on its site? I'm doing a small site, my first paying
one, for a small business. Do I have to do something before putting a
similar statement on their site?

Once your design is in a "recordable or storable form" it becomes a
copywritten work. However, in law the more documentation/proof you have the
better your case so you should register any work that's important to you
with the USPTO.
In the mean time, you could print the code to your website, or your logo, or
other graphic work to paper; have the post office date stamp the envelope
including the sealed edge; and then mail the letter to yourself (don't open
it.) This gives you some proof while you wait for the USPTO to send you
written acceptance of your copyright.
Kind Regards,
Nathaniel

Actually, you need to register it with the copyright office which is a whole
different bureaucracy from the Patent and Trademark Office. Copyright office
has an excellent website:
http://www.copyright.gov/
USPTO explains the difference here:
