- Design Challenge - Week 1
- Posted by Drew on May 16th, 2007
Over the past several months Matthew Moulton has been claiming several
in this group are "design deficients", "unproducing fuckwits",
"talentless", with "stunted creatively", etc. all the while while
boasting of his own "God level" talents. I, for one, don't take offense
to any of this due to his cluelessness and irrelevance, but on May 7th
he made the following boast:
<snip>
"Fact is there isn't anyone in this froup, not even you Spacey, who can
match me as far as sheer level of ability and skill."
<end snip>
Well now, I just couldn't resist *that* challenge and thus an excerpt
from that thread follows:
<snip>
You're on.
Here are the rules:
• Incorporate the letter form "WORD". (A nod to your "word art")
• Base colors are not to exceed the primary range. Tints are allowed and
color combinations of the primary colors are allowed, but not to exceed
the tertiary range.
• Image size: 400 x 300.
• Produce 1 work per week. Deadline for posting is 5 pm EST 5/16, 5/23,
5/30 and 6/6.
• Open to all and any medium.
• This is a GRAPHIC DESIGN competition. Coding is OT for this newsgroup.
If you insist on defining coding as graphic design, take this to
alt.design.coding and you loose by default.
• No cross posting. Period.
<end snip>
* 2 rules were removed after discussion.
Today is the deadline for Week 1 and the following is my contribution:
http://pariomarketing.com/designchallenge/week1.html
Though I post 3 designs and they each meet the challenge, if I have to
choose one for this it will be 1-3.
If Matthew doesn't post his link in this thread I'll add it in a later post.
Now back to work.

Since the deadline has past I must assume that the following are
Matthew's effort towards the challenge:

Let it be noted that Matthew broke several of the rules with the
following contributions:
The image is not 400x300 as required.
And though not a rule break, the link is corrupt/invalid. He must be a
n00bie so I'll let him off the hook on this one.
Again the size is not 400x300 as required.
The colors of this image do not fall within the tertiary range of the
color wheel.

Uh, I forget, I covered it another post when I made up the scale.
Drew's rules NEVER specified what unit of measurement the 400x300 had
to be in (like the amateur that he is) so I made up my own scale.
It's scary to think that people like Drew are actually working in the
design field. I mean when you're dealing with graphics, architecture,
etc, etc you HAVE TO BE PRECISE! And if you don't put down THE UNIT
OF MEASUREMENT for something...holy shit. I mean does it GET any more
amateur hour than that? I've known production studios and science
labs that would FIRE your ass for forgetting something like that.

Ya know, I really wish you would resist that challenge and all such
challenges...
Failing that, could you, and everyone else who can't resist use a
consistent flag in the subject or body of a message to indicate that you
haven't resisted.
Killfiling would be made much easier that way.
OMH seems like a good enough flag for the task.

Sorry, I meant the challenge presented by Matt.
With the persistent activity around Matt, I suggest a convention that
allows set it and forget it filtering of all associated postings. If I
filtered on "Design Challenge" it seems inevitable that something
interesting would get killed.
OMH would work because it could serve much as OT in the subject header
does and is unique enough to be entered into the body of the message as
a flag as well.
OMH in this newsgroup could serve as OT does. ...fair warning and a
filterable flag.

I could just kill the thread as I have on any number of occasions, but
that doesn't answer all cases. I posted to this thread and have to keep
it live until there is no reason to pursue the idea I've proposed any
more.
The preferred solution would be to answer all cases. I've seen
newsgroups adopt and insist on conventions and it usu. works better than
filtering on predictible words and phrases.
I've not used Microsoft anything for Internet in years, and removed
Outlook from my system shortly after I realized it could be done.
but
Does the filtering utility of your version of Outlook Express not
contain something like "Contains specific words or phrases" buried
somewhere in it's list of filtering options with "body" as a tick list
option? (or some such)

I can't find it, just "from"; "subject"; "date sent"; "size" and "all
messages". Not brilliant I know but then I'm not expecting much from
something like Outlook anyway. However, once I've reformatted my system in
OSX I'll probably be waving goodbye to Outlook and use Thunderbird, although
I haven't been able to get on with the filtering systems in that client
either.
Is OMH the only person you feel needs special treatment in this way?

Well, gee ya dumbfuck, the deadline isn't until the 16th, so that'd
make it a PROOF at this point, not so much the final product ya
dribbling little poser ass wannabe. It should be noted that 400x300
is the exact image size I use for my blog entries, so OBVIOUSLY the
final entry, which will be on my blog, will meet the size factors.

This quote demonstrates that he knew the 400x300 was "pixels". But all
he can do know is blather on because he has nothing else to grasp a hold of.
I look forward to next Wednesday round. Anyone interested is welcome to
participate.

A fair question. Give me a minute.
I have had OMH binned for quite awhile and I have a context filter that
deletes posts based on a number of oft requoted bits of text. This
prefilter heightens my signal to noise ratio.
My concern is with the usual USENET fallout of messages that do not
contain useful markers. Most of the posters who incite or react to Matt
seem otherwise reasonable types so I felt that suggesting a convention
to lower the noise further might be useful ...And in this newsgroup,
unlike some other groups, possible.
I picked OMH because it's short, most of the current noise surrounds him
and 'OMH' doesn't resemble any acronyms I can recall. It could as easily
be ARG or some such (which is probably fairer). SM is, I would guess,
taken.
So my answer is a qualified no. Basic filtering can deal with his posts
and they require no special treatment.
If it stopped there, I would have said nothing. It is others' posts to
him or about him that need some kind of identifier. An identifier puts a
better wall around the sandbox, so to speak.
