Design Engineer Personal Logo Help
Posted by ikkyslash-mail@yahoo.com on February 16th, 2008

I am having a hard time designing a good decent logo that represents
both engineering and design with no text. I have have thought of
several solutions and ideas and I need some advice with my logo. Here
is the mock logo:

http://www.dengineer.com/images/logo.png

I know that I want to show a gear, a pencil, and use black and white,
with some grey. This logo is for a design class and I want to get some
feedback for this logo before I start doing it in illustrator. I am
pretty satisfied with how it looks right now but I am thinking more
like an engineer than a designer. I really appreciate any feedback.
Thanks

is two disjointed and unconnected illustrations. There's no type,
there's no identifiers, there's no statement about who and what it is
for. At the very least, someone should come away from a logo knowing
what company the logo is for. Even better, someone should come away from
a logo with the knowledge of what company is for, and what attributes
represent that brand.

That doesn't mean you have to literally illustrate the company's brand
attributes, just that the use of type and imagery support those attributes.

This is odd assignment but I will try to come up with other ideas.
If there was a company involved it would include me and only me. The
message would be that I am a mechanical engineer who enjoys design.
This project for me is really abstract ..., but yeah it's not a
commercial logo for a company that contains the company's message.
Thanks for you input, I'll keep thinking of other ideas.

I'm a retired engineer and the only thing this collection says to me is

Nothing there says design in any engineering sense. Even the drafting part
implies intern at best.

As an analogy go-cart vs. NASCAR.

It seems like you are working on a pictogram more so than a logo. And

Show the tools used in mechanical engineering but also show the tools
used for design (creativity)You need to incorporate something that
says creativity or design - maybe a brain - or something with a human
touch.

| You guys have been really helpful. My Logo is due in two days and I
| came up with a new personal logo.

| the feedback, it is greatly appreciated.

If the logo is intended to work for a demographic of engineers the design
has technical inconsistencies that will act as a turn off as the gears,
literally and physically, don't mesh. (Says to me, an engineer, these
people don't know what they are about. So do I REALLY want to hire them?)

I recall a print that was made to be sold to hunters. The only problem the
depiction was of a male dog nursing young. Sales were ZERO.

An aside the design is more appropriate for an icon than a logo.

Might help if we knew what sort of engineering discipline you were
targeting.

i.e. (solar and wind turbine). Adding some kind of human touch might
help, I'll think about it and and try to incorporate that into a

I think #4 is the best. That was a nice touch making the pictogram
appear to be in progress. I would make the "line in progress" bolder,
simplify the pen to basic shapes and lines, try to get the gear teeth
that are touching to appear so they are just about to touch leaving
some negative space around them, maybe flatten the ends of the gear
teeth. Do you need to incorporate a gray value into the design? You
probably have enough time to tweek the design.
