Design feedback please

Hi everyone,

here's a first shot for a design, it's for a site just kind of a portal, but
not only, i'm building,
with links to job agencies, and so on, but i want it to be more graphic
design and web, IT oriented.

http://www.hippocampes.com/olivier/d...rk/ebauche.jpg

before i finish, i'm just interested in having a few comments to know what
you guys think of this layout.

thanks very much for the time you'll take on that ;o) even if it's just a
few mins..

All the best
olivier

Hi Oliver,
Only some observation:

1. I find the photo in the header too much big, if you let it in this way I
must scroll the page to find the navigation menu *I'm under 1024 x 768
screen res.*

2. I think it's better to place all the navigation menus in the same place
*left margin side or right margin side*.

3. Why not to realize a rational grid for the layout and try to cut out some
part of the photograph using it? The photo placement is very predictable, I
will try to do something a little bit unusual with the photograph.

4. I don't see a logo in your layout, is it under development or do you plan
to add it later to the layout? I think it would be very interesting to see
in which way it would play into the overall design *colour branding, kind of
shapes used for it, lettering and so on...*

I hope this will help you and let us know about the site developing process.

Cheers and Beers :-)

The first impression of the overall look and feel is very good. A
closer look results in finding two different styles. 1st is the
technical style with sharp edges (used at the top & bottom of the
picture) the 2nd style is the one of the 3 boxes at the bottom, they
have smooth rounded corners.

I should go for the 1st style and lose the rounded corners.

I should integrate the three boxes in the pictures, make the top
spacing much smaller and maybe downsize the whole image to 770 pixels
width (you want to support all screen resolutions, right?).

For the rest you should create the logo.

But don't loose the colors, neither the image, they're great!

Keep up the good work!

Barton

hi davide,

i'll play with the photo to make it a little smaller, the positionning will
stay as is, because it has to be slightly design, but not too much ;o) so if
i go for totally trendy people will be lost here, i'll be off target ;o)

For the navigation i totally agree with you, global navigation up top or
bottom, whatever but in one place, and local navigation on the sides or just
below/above the global one. i'll fix a place and stick to it ;o)

Logo and tagLine will come, and will be placed either upper left, or lower
right. i'm working on the logo now. it will be very Text based with maybe
something added ;o) i'll see, i'm a lousy drawer for the moment ;o)

what do you mean by a rational Grid ? making a grid on the image (like
squares and rectangles, and playing with type and various hues/saturations
for certain blocks ?

I'll make some updates, and work on the design, then when i start the dev
either in ColdFusion or PHP i'll keep you guys posted.

thanks for your time and comments, i'll go for some changes..

cheers & beers too ;o)
Olivier

Oliver,

Keep in mind from my critique that I don't consider myself a design expert,
I just know what I like and what I don't. I think the colors are perfect,
right on target, however you have 2 styles conflicting in the image. First
is the sharp 'edgy' look at the top and at the bottom the rounded menus.

I think you could get away with using both if you were willing to round a
/bit/ on the top image and throw a few edges on the bottom, keeping both
round and straight. IMO I would stick with the sharp edges only. And try to
incorporate them more with the main image yet not a part of it.

Also I might drop the bottom footer off altogether. One more thing, in the
main image there is a color change, whats with that? Don't think I really
like that unless that image was seperated more from the main. All in all a
good start, let me know when its finished.

Thanks barton,

i agree with you for the rounded, square, when i designed that i wondered if
it would be conflicting or not,
and by the comments you gave me and those from josh, i realize they do ;o)
I'll work with that.

Yup for the size, i'll resize tp 770, but i'll kill the sides when i
finalize, like that i'm sure i can nudge... usually work like that, better
than doing it the other way around ;o)

Working on my logo and rest there, i'll repost when there's news ;o)

thanks for your time and comments, constructive as always ;o)

All the best,
Olivier

Josh, you're exactly in the target i'm aiming ;o) not just designers, but
people looking for information,
but with a design eye, and who like seeing decent design for various online
solutions.

Droping the bottom footer might kill it i feel, because the next levels will
contain quite a lot of text,
as it's basically a job listing portal (not for jobs, but actual links to
companies who might offer job mailers, job agents, agencies, and so on).

For the sharp/rounded edges, as i said to barton, and i can't agree more
with you both, it is conflicting, so i have 2 choices, either kill the
rounded below, or smooth the edges up top ;o) not quite decided, but i quite
like the sharp ones, so i'll have to decide that this evening ;o)

I'm really happy with your comments, and time spent, thanks for all that,
i'll be very happy to pass constructive comments when you get to post stuff,
or just newsChat ;o) I'll keep you guys posted with another thread when i
make it evolve ;o)

cheers & beers ;o)
Olivier

Oh ... and is that a drop shadow? I see fuzzy corners around the text
box. Have you tried simple crisp lines?

Just a thought ...

yup, slight drop shadow, i'm trying the crisp line now, and doubting ;op
for the panoramics, i took them from inertia Stock Exchange stuff, they have
really nice stuff,
and with depending on the rights the uploader set you can use them for
free.;o)

Thanks for the feedback, i'll add some whitespace in the boxes, i've made
them sharp instead of rounded,
and will see what comes up ;o)

Hi Olivier, thanks for the comments about my logo and sorry for not having
reply you yet.

I used the word 'rational' but I must admit that this word means very less.

I meant the use of an invisible grid over the photo, delete some portion of
it where the grid stands or where the grid forms rectangular shapes. The
photo will result partitioned in different pieces and the whole will forms a
geometric graphical look.
Anyway I think that is not what you are trying to do because this kind of
graphic layout is a lot trendy for the audience's website.

Sorry but I haven't find real examples at the moment and I hope that my
recent explanation is more comprensible than the previous one.

yip, i see what you mean ;o) you just delete parts of your image, portions
of your grid, with either diagonals, or squares, or rectangles, but just
parts you take out, or alpha fade or so.. ;o)

thanks for the explanation, on your first comment, i thought you meant that
i should grid parts of the image, with a white line or so, and just put text
or fade, the stuff.

cheers, and no problem for the logo comments, it's nice to have some
interaction between people here ;o)
