Does anyone know how this is done?
Posted by Starchild on March 27th, 2008

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...s2/drawing.jpg

About 5 years ago, I saw this, it was a picture someone had done at a
beach amusement park. They put in a photo (in a machine of some kind-
computer program I would think) and paid $5 and got their photo back,
plus a picture that looks like a sketch.

At the time I asked on various discussion groups I was on and nobody
knew how it was done. I got suggestions and links and looked on my
own, but nothing really did it like the machine did.

I learned how to do sketch-like looks in Photoshop, with various
steps, ending with a light "sketch" look (or darker pen and ink look
depending on how it was set) but it's not the same. And, not all
pictures come out good doing it.

Someone at the time suggested Kodak EasyShare software, which had a
cartooon "fun effect" but this wasn't the same.

They don't have the detail the drawing from the "machine (computer
program?) has. It actually looks like someone drew it with a pencil.
It must include a scanner of some kind, too.

I had given up on it, but now I've found newsgroups like this one, I
thought someone might know. Though, if it's some kind of computer/
program especially made for making money at amusement parks, etc. it
might not be something simple one can get and use as a plug in, or get
as a download on the internet.

Just one of those "trying to find out just to find out" things.

Thanks!

I've done "quick-y" cheater illustrations similar to your sample using
Fractal Painter (now owned by
Corel and part of their suite, I believe). With FP all you do is set your
image to "clone source," set a tracing paper and choose your medium (ink,
pencil, pastel, conte crayon, oil, watercolor, etc) and then, gently and
carefully, "expose" the areas that you want to seem illustrated/rendered.
Your medium choices are dynamic -- you can easily change from conte crayon
to watercolor to oil, effortlessly.

It still requires effort, time and care, but the results can be quite
beautiful. Anywho, I really recommend it, though it's not a replacement
technique for the "real thing." At least, not for paying clients who want
the *real* thing (I think that would be unethical).

FTR, Corel often offers free trials on their suites and software. While CD
is NOT a replacement for Illy, IMHO, FP is worth it! At least, you can play
with it and decide for yourself!!

Thanks

I wonder how they had this all set up to do automatically, by some
computerized machine at an amusement park. I'm guessing whatever it is isn't
CHEAP (LOL)

I like being creative myself, anyway, and wouldn't need something like that
for occasional personal use.

It did come out nice, though, I think.

So many programs, so much money, so little time in the day. It's usually
something I don't have.
I will look for free trial downloads to try.

Sounds like something good anyway.

I looked this up, and found Fractal Design Painter, a site with the download
but it wouldn't work (and the highest Windows it was for, was 2000)

I couldn't find it anyplace else, I looked on Corel in the suites. Didn't
see anything with that name. I found some websites where people were asking
what happened to it.

In the looking, it seemed to be related to Painter, and I have an older
version of this (Painter 7 says Procreate, maybe this was before Corel) and
it has some of what you said in it. Canvas tracing paper, clone and clone
source.

I've never done much with Painter, so I don't know the basics, but now I'm
going to go over it, see if I can figure it out.

Seems like every day I get into something new and there's not enough time
in the day and night.

Even if I don't recreate the sketch picture, it seems like Painter does
some interesting things.

Nope, Painter is still one of Corel's most popular products. In fact,
there's several magazines devoted to it. Additionally, it's one of the only
Corel programs that's available for the Mac. The latest version is x (10).
Not sure why you couldn't find it????

Anywho, here's the link. The newest system it supports is Vista (for
Windows) and Tiger (Mac).

To make trying it easier for you, here's the link to the trial download:

Let me see if I can create something similar using the default effects
in Paint Shop Pro 6 (a decade old graphics proggie).

Here's my original graphic:
http://www.backwater-productions.net...g_Original.jpg

*experiments*

Okay, I came up with five renditions of the effect:
http://www.backwater-productions.net...iltering_1.jpg

http://www.backwater-productions.net...iltering_3.jpg
http://www.backwater-productions.net...iltering_4.jpg
http://www.backwater-productions.net...iltering_5.jpg

I used a variety of combinations, most of them centering around the
charcoal filter with a detail setting of 90 to 95 and an opacity
setting of 5 to 10. At that point I used various methods of bluring,
adding noise, edge enhancement and sharpening.

Overall it's not a very difficult effect to pull off, but there are
literarily HUNDREDS of varients you could try. This is one of my
favorites:
http://www.biorust.com/tutorials/detail/161/en/

A soft edged cell shading technique. Just remember as you're
experimenting with filters to keep track of the settings you're using
so that you'll be able to recreate the effect later. That's a mistake
I've made more than a few times, which makes it very difficult if you
ever need to change something around or use the effect on another
project.

OP: Just thought I'd mention -- if you're using Photoshop (don't know a durn
thing about Paint Shop) you can try out Matt's suggestions/techniques and
then save the "actions" so you can recreate the same effects later (beats
memorizing or writing stuff down!!) or just compare later and see what
technique you like best.

Just use a logical naming convention for the actions files and the image
files -- such as Filter_One.js (for the action, if I remember the format
correctly) and Filter_One.jpg (for the image).

Unsurprisingly he has no work of his own to show, so presumably it's a
jealousy issue.

You do want to be careful when using filters and don't OVER use them.
A common occurence is someone will get a new graphics program and then
they just start throwin filters all over everything and it winds up
looking like a guady mess. The bevel filter probably being the most
abused. "Artist Mike" is a good example of someone who over uses
filter effects:
http://www.artistmike.com

He actually gets business selling that crap too because there are a
lot of newbie businesses and such who aren't very design savvy and
don't have much experience or understanding with graphic design and
will make the mistake of going with something like that, not realizing
they could have something far better. A lot of people just have no
sense of style or at least they aren't aware of universal styles that
will mass appeal, which is VERY important in a business. Less is
usually more.

I've never used GIMP so I'm not sure, but presumably it has some
filter effects that come with it, in which case you can experiment
with each of them. When experimenting be sure to play around with all
the settings, the default settings usually result in the most
glaring/gaudy form and your work will very quickly be recognized as
default filter effects. Once you know what each of the filters can do
and what all of their settings do you can then experiment with mixing
and matching different filter effects to achieve new effects.

When reverse engineering a design I'll try to examine each of the main
elements within it...is it color or black and white? Is it sharp or
blurred? Does it have high contrast or low contrast? Is it beveled
or is it flat? There's lots of other questions you can ask as well.
And once you answer a question you should have more questions. Like,
if it is blurred, is it motion blurred or is the blurring static? And
then does it look like a standard blur, just a soften filter or a
gaussian blur? Once you start answering all these questions you can
quickly figure out how to create a similar graphic using the various
filters that most closely match what you've seen in the image.

The major key though is to experiment, if you don't know your filters
and what they can do you can't reverse engineer a design.

In my opinion the major learning points in graphic design should
cover: Filters, Selections, Layering, Color and File Types. And then
in each major category there are important sub categories, like
anti-aliasing in selections and color reduction methods in color.

I might write a text book on it someday...maybe as a companion text
book to the web design one I'm working on.
