Feedback requested on Ajinomoto site design
Posted by Ben Woodward on November 25th, 2003

Hi folks.

Wondering if anyone would care to offer a little feedback on a site
layout I'm working on... the client is called Ajinomoto AminoScience,
and they basically manufacture and supply amino acids to companies who
need... amino acids. The site's target audience, therefore, is comprised
of people who already are familiar with the ins and outs of the subject
matter, and it mainly focused on providing information to the customer
on why their products are better, and how Ajinomoto offers superior
products in general.

This particular site is for the US office, so the audience is mostly
US-based (as opposed to if we were doing the main site, which would have
a much larger Japanese user base). The objective is to reorganize the
content and present it in a much simpler way... the site now is a
hodge-podge of unnecessary Flash and clunky frames, so we also want to
give it a technological update as well.

You can see the original here (but hang on... it's a bumpy ride):
http://www.ajiaminoscience.com

The current version of the redesign is here:
http://www.perpetuainteractive.com/c...te/layout.html

We've got a couple of "corporate standards we have to design within
and/or keep elements in (like that wavy line on the left, and the red
bar at the top, which we really can't play with too much), but the rest
is "pretty much" up for consideration... I'd love to know what you guys
think so far. The main image (the running guy) will probably be replaced
with a short Flash clip, for a little visual enhancement, and some of
the other lements are FPO at this point, but it's worth getting a little
feedback from peers at this point. And the layout itself won't
necessarily stop where it does on the screen -- it'll continue with the
content, and then bump the bottom of the browser to make a full centered
column (this is obviously just an image online for design revision workup).

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

looks ok tho its's not terribly inspiring, nav strip could use some more breathing space, it looks
very squashed in at the top there. the striped bg seems very inappropriate, its colour doesnt go too
well with the site colours, i don't know wot these strange shapes are in that black middle strip
are.
perhaps the the strap line would look better underneath the logo.

Hello Ben.

I would just be a little hesitant to give the "thumbs-up" to the colors.
They are earthy, which is not a bad, but they're kind of a bland earthy.
Have you tried any other color combinations? Either that, or minimize the
spacing between the greyish-brown banding and grey (make the greyish-brown
more prominent). Use some color combination to lighten up the page a bit.
I'm thinking greens, reds, yellows, oranges, light-browns, light-blues,
etc..

Looks concise and compact, otherwise. Good job.

Ryan

I think they are amino acid chains, those in the field would most likely be
able to recognize them as such.

Pretty dreary, Ben. That running image has all kinds of "bad"
connotations -- cold, dreary, miles-to-go, forlorn. It has a feeling
of 'I desperately need help' rather than 'we are your amino acid
problem-solvers and here's why'. The understated colors reinforce the
message of the image and the required elements -- hot vibrant reds --
stick out because they don't match. They don't brighten up the feel --
they just look required. Maybe adding a tiny touch of the red to your
browns and tans will pull things together a little better.

Aside from the image, the aren't any specific elements that stand out
as really bad but the sum total of the elements leaves me feeling
alone and depressed.

Start with an image change -- that will affect everything else.

Have a good Thanksgiving....cpg
