Well, this here be my personal Usenet's blog of sorts, if ya don't
like it...well I can go and fuck yer mom if you want, just post the
bitch's number, I'll handle it.
In annoying news my gawd damn brakes went to shit and now I have to
have the master cylinder in my Oldsmobeater replaced if I wanna keep
driving it, so that's gonna set me back about $200.
In positive news it looks like I shall be the owner of a house come
February. I made an offer on this one semi-run down jobby for
$80,000, they countered back at around $80,600 so I told 'em that was
acceptable. It's three bedroom, two bath, with a large storage shed
thing in the back (which has electricity). They've got peeps renting
it right now though so we're going to give them a month to move out
and then have a final walk through/inspection (to make sure the
renters didn't wreck the joint) and then if all is good, I shall sign
the closing papers.
The structure is sound, but the rest really does need gutted and
redone room by room. It's livable, but not exactly up to my standards
in its present state. So it'll take a lot of work in fixing it up,
but that's okay, I kinda wanted to get a fixer upper opportunity.
Needs a lot of yard work too, but at least it has a yard (a big one at
that) with lots of backyard space too. It's also got this car port
thing which is pretty much a garage except it doesn't have a garage
door on it.
If I wind up getting it I plan to setup a site for it, where I'll go
through and take a ton of pictures of it in its present state and then
take more pictures as I start fixing it up to kind of show the
progression/transformation. I think I'll also include some how-to
stuff on there as well, like how to put up dry-wall, insulation, how
to do the electrical stuff, etc. Should be pretty fun and when I'm
done the house will be worth substantially more than what I bought it
for.

Congrats! Nothing beats home ownership even if it does require a
shitload of responsibility. The best advice I could give you is don't
skimp on your tools. If you have to do a lot of work, don't buy the
shitty stuff, you will regret it. Mikita is my brand of choice, but my
house is new so I don't need the heavy duty stuff. I just have a set of
Ryobi cordless tools which work well for small jobs, but wouldn't be
suitable for drywalling an entire house or something. The drill is
pretty good though, and the cordless is handy when you move from room to
room hanging blinds and stuff.

tools will just piss you off, if you plan on working good long days on some
jobs, do not buy cordless anything, get the corded type, and a couple of
good long, preferably 12 guage extension cords.
I've been in this house for over 10 years now, it was a fixer upper, now it
is finally at the point when it is pretty much done.
Note, it will take twice as long and twice as much money as you expect, no
matter how thoroughly you spec out any given part of the project, in an
older house there *will* be surprises, under nearly every bit of plaster ro
wall board you remove etc. If your house has been owned by do it
yourselfers before, some of those surprises get scary.
Also check (anonymously) with your local code enforcement people before you
buy, some areas of the States do not even allow homeowners to to basic
plumbing/electrical work without hiring a pro, all it takes is one nosey
neighbour and the code people can really ruin your day.
Most important though, have fun.

Makita is a great tool as well as Dewalt.

You will end up working harder than your tools.

Been there, done that. A nice example of that is a pipe cutter. If you
need to cut one pipe and that's all you are likely to ever do, just buy
the $3 cheap ass one and throw it away afterwards. If you have to cut
pipes for plumbing that new bathroom, buy the best one you can get your
hands on and keep it for life.
