How to cope with information overload?
Posted by newnimproved@gmail.com on January 10th, 2006

Hello all,

How does everyone in the graphic design community deal with information
overload?
Are there any specific tips?
Thanks in advance.

Best wishes for 2006,

What do you mean by "information overload"? Have you taken on too many
projects? Or are you talking about the information within one project that's
giving you design nightmares?

80/20 principle. 20% of what you do brings you 80% of the benefit, once the
20% is reached ... screw the rest.

I like the above. Personally, (I like to think) that I thrive on the
vast amounts of information/data "out there." Look at it this way, the
one who dies with the most control over his/her data wins!

Seriously, there is a lot of information and data out there, however
just try taking it in stride, with practical approaches. Old fashion
methods often work best- take breaks!

Duct tape. Duct tape solves all problems. For information overload, I wrap
it firmly around my head and that keeps it from exploding.

OT but consider:

It's not how much data you control but how much of your data is controled by
others.

Although I am very new at design, wish I started years ago, I have been
designing software for 25+ years, now close your eyes and imagine that
your PhotoShop, PSP, or whatever tool changes completly every two years!
There seems to be no way around it, or is there?

In software engineering I try to keep it basic, don't spend too much
time becoming an "expert" on a specific thing but become good at
a bunch of different things and have a ton of technical books on
your desk for reference/look good.

two ways in which i do it:
1) take a set of 5 topics at a time and keep track of them. later
select any other 5 and so on...
2) spend an hr a day to read the digest of the forums

hope this helps :-)

My response is Information Architecture (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_architecture ). Although it is
a big topic in the web, Print Graphic design also has a fair share of
it. In fact Richard Saul Wurman (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Saul_Wurman ) proposed the idea
after he did projects on developing the series of ACCESS travel guides.

Read his book: "Information Anxiety"

Did you mean the book or "Information Anxiety" itself?

Either way this might help:
