- Illustrator CS3: the black in my swatch is *not* pure black!!!
- Posted by ladydi1984@gmail.com on June 25th, 2008
In my default color swatch palette, the 'black' is not actually black,
but r35 g31 b32. has anyone else noticed this or is it just my
version? this *totally* screws me up, i need *pure* black for my
illustrations. i know if i double-click on it i can change it, but
when i open a new document it goes back to r35 g31 b32. does anyone
know how to change the default? or is there a goofy setting somewhere
(like in my profiles)?

You need to set the colors to CMYK when you first open a document. Go
to the top menu bar and select FIle > Document Color Mode > CMYK
Color. If you already have created images using RGB colors, then go to
the top menu bar and select Edit > Edit Colors > Convert to CMYK.

I can across your posting as I was trying to figure this out myself.
Everything I found on the internet was useless so I started messing
around with some settings. I found that when you create a new
document, if under "New Document Profile" you choose a profile that
defaults to CMYK (Print & Basic CMYK) it will load the CMYK swatch
library, regardless of switching the "Color Mode" in the "Advanced"
section to RGB. If you notice when you do that, it will give one of
those yellow exclamation point warnings things. So if you're going to
be working in RGB make sure you pick an RGB profile and it will load
the RGB swatch library and your default black will be R=0 G=0 B=0.
