- I'm new here...

Well, sort of. I read the group, but rarely post. Just thought I'd introduce
myself. I do mostly print work as an in house designer/marketing coordinator
for a software company: catalogs, ads, brochures, and promotional pieces. I
started out doing paste up work in the 80's during high school. Then went to
college to pursue politcal science. Don't remember why I ditched the fine
arts degree. I guess I wanted something else to fall back on.
With my BA in hand, I landed a marketing job that turned into a graphic
design job. I'm self taught on the computer using InDesign, Photoshop and
Corel Draw. I've learned a lot here at ADG about web design. I'll have an
online portfolio some day... I've just started freelancing at home. Mostly
small business identity packages and direct mail pieces.
Thanks for making such a great community here.

Hello Ann and welcome!
Be sure to let us know how your freelance business is coming along and don't
forget to post a link to your portfolio when you get it up and running.
What sort of self promo are you using for your freelancing and what has
produced the most results for you?
Looking forward to your contributions here.

Hi Ann,
Glad to meet you in ADG,
your experiences and skills are very interesting especially political
science studies.
I guess that your work are very influenced by that.
I'm curious about your portfolio and I think you will give us important
contributions.
Stay tuned :-)

Hi Gem,
My first self promo was a candy business card. I printed and wrapped mini
chocolate bars (with my info and logo) and handed them to everyone I new. I
even made a few hundred and passed them out to trick or treaters on
Halloween. I did it to bring attention to my graphic design services. The
funny thing is that I started getting orders to make candy wrappers for
birthday parties, and birth announcements. It's fun, but labor intensive.
I'm not going to get rich by any means. Most of my design work has been
through word of mouth and networking in business groups. I'm working on a
direct mail post card right now.

Welcome to the group, Ann.
I'm not a designer, but that didn't hold me back to post in excess of 1,800
messages last year only...
Looking forward to see your work,
Yours truly,

Hello Anne,
I read your post and found out that we have a lot in common. I mostly
lurk and post once in a blue moon.
This pretty much sums up my work experience as well:
I do mostly print work as an in house designer/marketing coordinator
In my case, I have a graphic design job that is turning into a
marketing job.
Best of luck.

Ciao!
I see that you are from Milano. My husband is from the south (Bari). I've
travelled in Italy many times and will be vacationing there in a few weeks
in the Gargano Peninsula, Roma, Firenze and Rimini. Not going to Milano on
this trip. Such a big city! We get lost.

Hi Joanne. Good luck with Marketing. It seems to pay more than graphic
design. Athough I shouldn't complain because I do have a job. Lots of people
out of work these days.

Hello Ann,
Sorry so long to reply, vacation and all.
Your candy wrapper is such a cute idea, especially for party invitations and
birth or wedding announcements. I think it was Helen [Limelight] who did some
wine bottle labels for client gifts. I liked that one too.
The direct mail postcard campaign seems to be a hot method right now. Carol, a
reg here, has had huge success with hers, as well as, a few others in the group
and Martha knows plenty about it. How do you find your targets?
When you mention networking in business groups do you mean joining or
volunteering in community organizations such as a CoC? Attending luncheons or
meetings?
Do you belong to any design groups like AIGA?
So what's your favorite sort of piece to design? I really took a liking to
publication and relish the challenge of corporate indentity.
