Job in London
Posted by misshyde on December 21st, 2004

Hi, I'm a graphic designer who's planning on moving to London shortly.
Can anybody tell me anything about graphic design market there at the
moment? Is it difficult to find a permanent job? Where to look? If I
decide on freelancing, how much do I charge. Let me add I'm a junior
with a 2 year experience.

Any help appreciated.

Your portfolio is critical. You really need THE BEST portfolio to
survive in the London market, it's really cut-throat down there. Dont
expect good money either. The cost of living in London is... horrific.

You're much better off in the Scottish market I get paid almost the
say as a London based designer, but a faction of the living costs here
in Edinburgh (although... you still need good portfolios!)

You think SpaceGirl is bad? Sheesh - James / DJS2C is worse! He even reckons
that music is his second language... go figure ;o)

You need to work on your grammar, too. Sorry, but "youthful enthusism" [sic]
is not an excuse. What are you going to do when you have a client's job
printed up and then find out that it's full of mistakes and has to be
re-printed? The client's not going to eat that cost, nor is the print house.
You're the one who's going to have to pay (and possibly lose a client). If
you can't pay attention to minor details like spelling and grammar, I as a
potential client certainly would not feel comfortable trusting you to pay
attention to the major details (in the client's opinion) of my design job.

Agrees with you. Not sure why im telling you this but I guess I did pass my
GSCE English...
Is noted and I will post with more care.

And I dislike it when people use double negatives i.e I aint done nothing!
And when people say "I SO couldnt do this".

Back to work.
