( Shark Electric) based in San Diego. This is the first draft.
Any constructtive critique will be appreciated.

I agree with you and I made my client aware of the negative
connotations of the name , but the client does not want to change the
name, but yes they have a tagline ( "taking a bite of high electrical
prices") it is positive and I think it works, but the client does not
want to add it to the logo. I am struggling to make it friendly
instead of aggressive or scary. Any suggestions??
mainly home owners and construction companies looking for affordable
professional electrical work.
About the typography I agree is not working, but my client wants
something bold, simple and easy to read, still working with different
sans serif fonts.
Thank you very much for your honest and valuable opinion. I will keep
trying and updating the logo for critique.

I do think your initial concept is good - it just needs a lot of work.
One issue I have is that if the graphic image was a stand-alone would
viewers even know it was a shark? Without the word "shark" I doubt is
many would be able to immediately recognize the image. That's a big
problem when you want a graphic within the logo to be a strong, easily
recognized identifying element.
The font selected for "SHARK" is bold and strong - but just doesn't
have any personality. If the client is really set on the name, both
the shark graphic and the fonts should convey a sense of personality
and perhaps feeling of less dread. The word "ELECTRIC" looks as if it
was just added on as an afterthought. Your fonts and any graphic image
all need to be working together to create a strong, concise, simple,
eye-catching and memorable identity - the elements in this example seem
to be working against each other.
With the name "SHARK" and a shark graphic as a logo element I do think
the client is making a mistake in not incorporating the tagline into
the identity somehow. We live in a society where sharks are feared and
it may be very difficult for you to project a positive spin on that
image within the logo - without some defining statement being included.
Best of luck!

Contariwise the symbolism of a shark is that of power...get
it...power...electricity...stick yer finger in a light
socket...bzzzt... *shrugs*
The more important question in my mind is...what's it for? I mean, is
this a letter head graphic or like for a website/print publication of
some kind...cause if so you ought to make it look a bit fancier. If
it's just a letter head graphic...eh, looks fine, don't over think it.
I would imagine it doesn't take much to impress yer client anyway so
don't do more than you need to unless you want to use the thing in yer
portfolio.

iehsmith arranged shapes to form:
Not alarmist at all els! The word "Shark" has extremely negative
connotations, not just because of the fear of the fish, but it's slang for
a cheat and ruthless business practice. IMHO it's branding suicide for an
energy company, which should be oozing reliability and responcibility.
Think about how the logo can start to build trust in the consumer. What are
the positive qualities of the shark that the company embodies? Speed?
strength? sole-purposeness? apply those to the logo, and forget the
electrified fish thing.

I don't agree completely. It really depends from the business activity. Take
for example a sportwear company like the following one:
http://www.paulshark.it/home_800.html
It's an italian sportware company that uses a shark within its logo. It
developes and produces specific garments for golf and sailing. Anyway in
this case, there is a coherent use of the shark symbol because it naturally
recall us the sea world.
Just my thought

I think it's easily identified as a shark (though at a size appropriate
for a letterhead or BC, I'm not sure) - but to reinforce it's identity,
I'd curve the lower jaw up a tad. I'm 99% sure you were going for an
"A" with the mouth, but it's looking a bit off without the lowerjaw.
I may be able to identify that it's shark so easily because I live in
Shark Central - the Florida Gulf Coast, so others may not see it so
clearly. Lord knows we have more than our share (that poor little boy
who was killed by a shark last year was only about 12 miles away from
us). But if you don't go shark fishing (like his Uncle clearly was)
from shore, they usually leave you alone.

Connie

Dear Jeff,
Thank you very much for your feedback. After reading all the critiques
I mostly agree with everything that have been said about the first
draft for this logo. I really appreciate your opinion and advice.
I know I need to explore different avenues for this logo, I really got
stock with my own prejuices about SHARKS (I also think that the name
is inappropriate for the business) but the client says that it will
work because is different, unusual and fresh. One of the reason
I accepted the project was because I thought it would be a challenge
to convey a sense of positive personality to it. I would like to let
you know than I admire your work and I think is a real privilege
having your expertise in this newsgroup.
I am sketching new ideas and directions. I will keep working on it and
updating the results for further critiques.

Carlos.

Thank you for your feedback, I know that the logo still need a lot of
work. To answer your question... what's it for? It should be the main
core for the hole identity system, so it really needs to be much
better that it is right now. But is true that the client would be
impress with anything, he also suggested that we could change it later
(crazy guy, he really does not understand the importance of the logo).
Anyway thank you very much for your opinion.
