- Logo opinions!
- Posted by Limelight on November 14th, 2003
Hi guys,
I'd like to put forward two logos to you and welcome all opinions on them.
(these two have been selected from six designs)
Details:
Business: Digital Video Academy
Qualifications: Adobe Accredited business
Target Market: Hobbiest to Professional
My thought process behind the designs:
They are reminiscent of the ADOBE branding as this creates a subconscious
attachment, acts as a draw card - something that people are already familiar
and comfortable with, without being too obvious.

I look forward to your opinions, thanks guys.

#2 gets my vote.
#1 is to 80's, to bold, power-dressing all that
I see the Adobe association closer in #1 though I'm not sure that isn't
because you told us it was...

Not nearly masculine enough. No sparkle. No "lights camera action". No

First I'd like to say I think you are on the right track.
I think it has to be easier to comprehend the whole logo and therefore I
think you might want to remove parts of the block on the V and pull down the
block on the D (in #2). Likewise you should make the DV more "ordinary" on
#3-2b. The reason for this is that the brand will not speak for itself and
will probably communicate together with the Adobe brand (or others). If not,
you should draw some general rules for how the different brands should be
placed in respect to one another. If there are no rules for that kind of
thing you will see some very strange layouts in the future. I've seen the
most bizarr examples of that.

Well when I read this I thought, "Gee, you're not going to knock that
off, are you?" But I was pleasantly surprised when I saw your solution (2).
With that said, on #2 I'd like to see the space cut out of the "D"
closed up to better balance with the negative space in the "V". Find a
better typeface for "Academy" and please, please work on the gawd awful
kerning. All that should solidify the mark better I think.
#3-2b does absolutely nothing for me.
Hope that helped.

I think the thing that makes the adobe logo work is the fact that the A looks
like a little hut..Adobe Hut..House...Wigwam..I dunno?
Only suggestions..No crit..
Number #2
1. The kerning is definitly weird looking...I want to pull the C closer to the
A and the Y closer to the M...
2. You may want to test it out in different ways/uses..For instance...Knock out
the DV in a reverse..Only use the negative space..Try a heavier font for
Academy (Right now the ACADEMY font seems kind of dainty when smashed upside
the big thick chopped up DV) ..Stack it vertically..etc etc.
The way this is currently set feels awkward to me..I am not sure why and I
don't have any brilliant tidbits of advice for you. I believe it feels weird to
me because the little funny thing on the V ( the horizontal ) is drawing my eye
directly overtop of Academy..So I feel as if my eye doesn't have anywhere to go
outside of "to the right".
Number 3-2b
1. This concept is definitly more dynamic and fluid...and I think the concept
of DYNAMIC would work if it were really pushed..After all..Digital video
simulates analog motion etc. etc.
I'm guessing the client drilled ADOBE's corporate ID in your head and that is
why you are talking about it?? and rationalizing your thought process..
If you hadn't said anything, I would have never got "ADOBE" from looking at
these..and I see that damn Adobe logo at least 12 times a day..You may want to
try saying "screw the draw card" or whatever..and think about something that is
very unique to this particular school ( outside of them being adobe accredited
). That probably just means that they get free software..and teach premiere and
aftereffects. That seems pretty standard to me..
I would think about what makes digital video different from analog video..I
would take a really good look at some video editing software and all of it's
unique characteristics...I would take a look at the students &
teachers..Hardware..The building, buildings or campus the academy works out
of.. Blah blah blah..

This was stated in the original post.

Brainstorming stage has been done. This is the stage we're at with the
client!

Thanks for your thoughts Tomas!
I appreciate your comment on fine tuning #2, Drew also mentioned this and I
will give it a try.
Thanks again,

Thanks for your opinions Drew!
I like this idea, Tomas has mentioned this as well... and I'll give it a go.
LOL! No worries! After I posted it I thought to myself "Sh*t... I should've
kerned that before showing anyone..." It's bad practice on my behalf. Thanks
for the slap on the wrist
P
Interesting you say that, as this is the preferred one by the client....
It certainly did, and I appreciate your comments. Thanks again.

Wow, thanks Brian. All your thoughts / suggestions are much appreciated....
Ya aha.... I know, I know... Drew pulled me up on that as well.... I'm very
bad... I should have fixed it prior to posting.
I like all these suggestions, love the reverse idea. Something so simple
hadn't crossed my mind, although looking over my sketches I pretty much had
every other idea covered!
There is a version of 'a more fluid' design, although the client hadn't
chosen it... it was also my favourite.
Ha! Rreally? That's interesting...
These are all good suggestions as was your whole post, thanks again for all
your thoughts Brian.
