- Mac advice wanted
- Posted by Barton on November 12th, 2004
Hello,
We got this Power Macintosh 7500 machine taking place in our server
rack at work and want to get rid of it. But I was thinking, as a
webdesigner, could I use this Mac as a test machine for websites?
I totally have no experience with Macs and its hardware. So I wonder
whether I could install OS10 and some browsers (IE 5.5 for Mac &
Safari) on it. Or is it too old and too slow for that?
Any advice appreciated.
Grtz,
Barton

Barton:
To the best of my knowledge, you'll need a G3 or better to run OSX.
Might want to check the online documentation at apple.com maybe...

We're Mac only in my shop.
I use my old 8500 for a sys 9-only machine with all my old plugins and
programs that didn't make it to 10. I have IE 5.2 on it along with an
old Virtual PC running Win98. Handy for as you describe but for your
needs, you'd need at least an old G4 to upgrade to 10 for Safari.

I have only 3 flaws. My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

That's what I'd do, I use an older PC to check sites. I can still run the
latest web browser/s, so it works for me.

Does your system run smooth?
I have an AppleG4 with OS 9.1 installed because I always thought it could
run really slow with OSX :-(

Runs fine as far as I can tell. I use my computer only for internet and

I upgraded my G4 about a month ago. It works pretty well. I did have to put
in some extra ram though. Its an evolutionary step to take, but it will have
some downsides. To me the font management is disturbing. I have to get
suitcase for osx...
If you decide not to upgrade to x yet, you definitly should upgrade to 9.2.
Its alot better than 9.1 (and also required if you want your classic mode to
work smoothly).

Thank you Tomas,
Pepe told me to upgrade to 9.2 many months ago and I don't yet:-(
I wish to switch to the last classic mode. Anyway it would be a pain to
download the whole software from the Apple website because I haven't a
brodband internet connection. I can only use an ISDN connection with both
the channels enabled *64+64 Kbps.* to speed up the downloading process.
