making a list of node/layer-based graphics software
Posted by Simon Strandgaard on May 3rd, 2007

I have found 46 products so far, some for mac, others for
windows and few linux-apps as well. I believe these is
interesting if you like making computer generated art.

http://opcoders.com/articles_about_g..._products.html

My intend is to learn from these products: what to do and what not
to do. So I can write a successful piece of software.

Please tell me if I have forgotten something.

Interesting, I'll have a look and see if I can think of anything, for one,
does it bring me a cup of coffee in the morning/evening/whatever mad time I
decide to start work?

What in paticular interests you on that list?
(I will see if I can fill in some more details)

I cannot help you with coffee. Thanks :-)

I am open to anything, as long as the list stays below 100 entries.

Right now I am trying out CADintosh, and afterward I will take look
at Digimage Arts' software. I tried Intaglio and Inkscape some time
ago.
IIRC these were not node/layer based programs for effects?
Thanks

btw: I should probably mention that it's about node/layer based apps.

....ya, you've forgotten INFINITY. *rolls eyes*

Technically anyone with professional level Flash coding skills could
make some form of graphics app that utilizes layering, hell even my
freakin sprite generator makes use of layered graphics. What you're
proposing is simply bullshit though, because downloading and looking
at the way every last graphics app under the sun handles layering
isn't going to get you squat, other than a LOT of wasted time and
effort.

You sound like some kind of a tweenage muppet fuck with grandiose,
whimsical, fantasy plans but no real means of delivering. I see your
type all the time, usually 14 or 15 year old kids who think they're
going to magically program the next big MMORPG and strike it rich by
age 16...just as soon as they finish their high school C++ course and
"get a little time" over summer break...yeah, sure kid, sure.

I hate to beat you up long side your tweenage head with reality, but
all those fancy graphics apps you see like Photoshop...yeah...those
took ENTIRE TEAMS of PROFESSIONAL LEVEL graphic designers,
programmers, systems analysts, etc to make that stuff...and it has
taken DECADES of development in order to get it to where it's at now.

The very notion of some tweenage muppet fuck coming along and
magically producing a piece of software that could even fucking
remotely DREAM of rivaling or replacing something like Photoshop is
just absolutely fucking absurd to the nth degree. You might as well
be claiming that you plan to conquer China next week using nothing
more than a box of tooth picks and some chewing gum. It's THAT
absurd.

Sorry that I didn't explain myself well enough.
Example of layers
1. foreground-layer: a filter that blurs the image
2. middle-layer: a filter that makes cartoon style
3. background-layer: picture of my grandmom

So the result is a blurred cartoonish grandmom!
A filter may have parameters. Changing a parameter
in the middle-layer affects the result immediately.

This concept has names such as: effect layers, live preview,
non-destructive filters.

Layers is simple. Node based allows more crazy
ways to combine filters and is more complex.

I look at what's user friendly in this area.

Like Inez, I'm not clear what it is that you're looking for. As I understand
your origninal post Xara fits your description of node/layer-based software,
so why, specifically would this not fit? How do you decide what fits and
what doesn't? You seem to be leaving out the major applications in this
field in your list.

I'm quite sure it was. IF I ever get an new Mac and IF I ever decide to
run bootcamp or the like, I'll probably try to get the app if MS doesn't
completely destroy it. Otherwise, I'm keeping these old betas. The
program has some wonderful features, but the interface of the beta
versions is still quite..."hinkie"

I haven't worked with it a lot, not enough to really learn it. I kinda
lost heart when I found out Mac development stopped. But I use the
B-Spline and Polyline tools often for drawing, especially for logos.
Then I export to Illustrator for finishing. Those tools are more
friendly for me to use since I haven't had a tablet for years. Love the
Effects Lines, though I haven't mastered working with them.

Sure wish Apple had bought out Creature House instead of MS

Great question, a better description is necessary.
Turning down things helps nobody.

I watched the Xara videos (4 of them). Xara uses layers,
but it's a different kind of layers that I am searching for.
One of the videos showed how to remove red eyes and do chopping.
These operations are applied inplace, so if you first did
red-eye-removal and afterwards chopping, then you cannot continue
modify red-eye-removal.

In a program with "realtime non-destructive effect layers", you
can continue modifying effects used earlier, while you look at the
result.
For example playing around with a fractal generator and passing it
through
a few filters such as half-toning, blur, bumpmapping. This is what's
exciting.
This category of programs make me forget about time and space.
Would it be easier if I refered to this as being "image synthesizer" ?
It has much in common with a music studio where you send audio
through boxes that does music effects. You can interact with these
boxes while music is send through.

hmm, this became a too long explaination. I hope it's better?

That is a small extra application within Xara Xtreme for doing
some photo work. it isn`t really the main application.

I do???? All the time.
I can even go back on my moves while working (after saving not, I would love
that possibility.)

Maybe I understand it wrong? Because that is about how it works to me.

Hmm you can undo the effects etc. but you can`t retrace your steps
after you reloaded a ".xar" file. Just this addition to prevent
misunderstandings.

PS why I use this program? Because it is the first program I felt
comfortable with after
I used my programs on my amiga 1200, finally I found a program that was
intuitive enough.
Oh yeah, later Magix will bring it out as part of their line, because they
purchased this program
recently.
