OT: my gap year (where to go?)
Posted by Matt Bostock on January 11th, 2004

Hi everyone,

I'm beginning to make plans for my gap year (the year just before
university). I'll have about 18 months in total to do what I want, no
commitments, nothing tying me down (hehe).

I'm not that sure what I'm gonna do yet, but I'm definetly gonna backpack
around the world for a month or two. I'm considering Interrailing around
Europe (where you pay about £270 for a month pass which gets you on 90% of
the trains in Europe for free (http://www.interrail.net)). I have a friend
who did that and she said it was fantastic. It's nice and cheap too

I also wanna see South America, the US, Canada, Alaska, Asia, India,
Australia... ok so pretty much everywhere. The only thing that's restricting
me is budget and time... I've got other things to do in my gap year (work,
possibly living in Paris for a good few months etc). I'm lucky in some ways
because I have some friends in a few European countries who I've met during
exchanges or whilst away on the Continent, so I have a couple of invites to
stay with them etc.

So... here comes the question... where do you recommend I visit?

Thanks in advance
Matt

Matt,

There are two types of round the world trip - the commercial one and the
proper travelling one. It depends what you want. I've got 1 set of mates in
Oz now, 1 just come back from a 'proper' tour, 2 going at the end of the
month and another couple came back last week.

Most have done the usual trip whic takes i North America, China, Australia,
NZ Fiji etc.... they've all loved it / are loving it

The lad who did the proper travel went away for 9 months, took in the
culture of everywhere he went, ate their food etc.... whereas those on the
commercial tour look for the nearest maccy d's!

Can't remember exactly where he went but I know russia, south america, peru
etc.. were all on the list. Most people have bought an all in flight package
(roughly £1000) and that covered them for X number of flights around certain
regions. Go see your nearest STA and you'll get a good deal -

Thanks Andrew... I'm doing a 'proper travelling' thing... totally roughing
it. None of this commercial stuff I'm visiting places like Bosnia... war
torn countries etc... I want to see reality, not just the shiney commerical
side of things.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Montreal, architecture is beautiful a mix
of old and new with a NA Euro style. Actually, been a long time since I
have been there. hmmmmm, maybe a snowboard trip to Tremblant is in order.

Live in Toronto, but I went to Western and then Fanshawe, spent about 6 and
a half years there (although some summers I went home). Lived on King
Street right across from the (now not so new) Covent Garden Market. Left
just as they were breaking ground on the arena. Heard the arena turned out
quite well and not the eye-sore most thought it would be. Loved it there,
had a good time.

The arena's great. Nice place.
I'm up at Fanshawe & Adelaide, lived here for the last 2 1/2 years.

Definitely, huh? Ah, youth :-) They say the darndest things.

My first thought was "Southern California has everything a 17 year old is
looking for and then some." Then I looked further in the thread and saw "I'm

Well, okay....that could be fun too.

Hi Dan,

I'm basically looking to see as much as possible and enjoy it as much as
possible, and get the best of both worlds. So while I'll be visiting Bosnia
etc, I'll have a good look at S California too

Hi,

Anyone know the cheapest place for transatlantic flights? In the UK we have
many low-budget airlines, but they're only for domestic or European flights.
So far the cheapest fares I've found from the UK to the US are about £380
(around $ 800).

Thanks,

Actually I think I might fly to Canada and then make my way down to the US,
it seems cheaper that way and makes more sense.

www.globespan.com seem pretty good.
