- OT: text clarity?
- Posted by SpaceGirl on May 30th, 2007
One of my designers saw this site today: http://www.internet2.edu/
How readable do you think the text is? It hurts my eyes! We emailed
their web people and they don't see to think there's a problem.

The measure is too long, since the text isn't scalable. And the letter
kerning is too tight in comparison to the word kerning. Bearing in mind my
eyesight is terrible this text isn't all that bad, even without my glasses -
mostly because it's dark text on a white background and dark blue is
probably one of the better colours to read. If I had to suggest anything it
would be to make the line lengths shorter: 10 words per line perhaps.

Even the text on the left? Seems horrible blurry to me (well, not just
blurry... kinda... weirdly rendered).
Here's what it looks like on this desktop: http://www.dhnewmedia.com/temp/internet2shot.jpg
I'll look again on my Mac when I get home, because frankly, everything
looks horrible under Windows to me!

You're not seeing what I see then. The three column text is simply not there
in my browser. I only see the first, introductory column.

Don't know, it looks pretty good to me on a Windows machine. We've run into
issues with machines that don't use the Windows font smoothing or use an
incompatable version of font smoothing (right click on desktop for display
properties>>appearance>>effects button>>Use following method of soothing
edges of screen fonts). could that play into what you are seeing?

Who's their primary audience? If it's young'uns like you, no problem

for the lead in on top is a big no-no ... when you advance in age,
contrast becomes a big problem ... and there's simply not enough
contrast in there. If a typical user over 60 saw that lead-in, they'd
assume that the entire paragraph is a link - too close to a link's
conventional color.
You know, if one of our local Gray Panthers saw that .... they'd go
ballastic!

Myriad pro was chosen by then designer and i've found it renders
differently depending on the platform. Maybe we'll switch to arial as
the primary.

Thanks very much for the post. I'll see if i can resolve the problem

browser on that system?
The for print style sheet uses three columns as well. Are the columns
invisible in "print preview" as well?
Thanks again!

Print preview in mozilla gives a three column grid.
In explorer the three columns are shown in one narrow column.
In netscape it previews 350 pages, of the ones I checked only the first page
shows the same as the screenshot but the rest seem to be blank.
Don't forget, OS9 on the mac is rapidly becoming a dead end for viewing web,
so whatever you do to fix this might be unnecessary work. F'rinstance, OS9
doesn't display Flash stuff anymore.
