- OT:URL for my portfolio?
- Posted by Joe3000 on January 4th, 2005
Hi designers.
I am just about to start my final semester of my design related degree and
have decided now is the time to put together an online portfolio of work.
I am not sure what domain name to register for my site.
My surname is a bit unpronounceable so I would rather avoid using my full
name.
My initials are JF so I was going to go for jfproductions but its already
gone.
I'd rather not come up with a random word as I would rather it be associated
to personal portfolio rather than a 'studio' or company, if that makes
sense?
So basically what I'm asking is what do you people have for the url on your
personal portfolios and do you have any recommendation as to what direction
one should go in or is that important anyway?
Also do you freelancers have your own business cards that you give out to
people?
Care to post images of any?
Thanks for your time.

This post isn't OT
We'll be the judges of that :-D What is it?
How about JFMedia? JFPortfolio? Doesn't have to be an amazing domain
name, so long as it's short, memorable and most importantly hosts an
excellent portfolio. People will remember a 26-character doman if the
portfolio is good enough inside. Your work should speak for itself.
I just used my full name.
Yes, and no I can't find it
Sorry I'm not of more use,
Matt

Hi designer.
Just my surname. I actually operate my business by it. Although you can
possibly punch above your weight by choosing an imprtant-sounding new-media
style name, I decided to go down the attentive personal service route. It's
just me over here, and I'm proud of it. If I were you, I would make a virtue
of your unusual name.
If you are interested, you can read a little story about my business card
and general identity here:

It's a bit of a repost, so apologies to anyone who's seen it before.
No, thank you for yours. Good luck with the career and all that.

I would suggest you to find a name that is short, unusual an that doesn't
exist over the web. In this way there will be more chances for you to be in
the top ranking.
JFolio for example it returns me only 55 results over Google, and no one of
them is relevant.
www.nucleus.co.it [it was my first mistake, there are too much Nucleus
company out there]
Anyway there is no portfolio section yet. There is only a temporary page
with a form to contact me.
The full website is under development. Come back later to see it!
Yes I do. I think it's really important to create an identity first.
I don't have an image of it ready to show you. I will put it in the final
website.
I wish you the best for your career and your personal life.
cheers :-)

Hi again.
I was trying to stay away from "choosing an imprtant-sounding new-media
style name".
So I agree with what your saying. Its not really an unusual name, just that
people always pronounce it wrong so I'd just like to tell them the name/url
and they can type it in or write it down correctly.
Nice site, I like the use of a key on the portfolio list part - good idea!
Thanks, we'll see what happens lol
Are you like, related to Jerry from that sitcom?
;-)

Thats pretty snappy, I like it!
I like the layout of your site. Look forward to seeing the rest of it.
All the best to you too.

Yeah, I agree the work should speak for itself, or speak for me!
Gave too many away I guess!
Don't be sorry, its all good ;-)

Again, I think this could be a virtue. If you have to spell it out to
someone, possibly in an amusing or memorable way, this might give it a
better chance of being imprinted onto their memory.
Don't tell anyone that it's just because I couldn't be bothered with
separate sections!
I'm sure if you go back far enough I am...
K.
