- Panther (OS X 10.3) Kills Suitcase 11
- Posted by Gary on October 28th, 2003
I have upgraded my Powerbook to Panther (OS X 10.3) and it is wonderful.
However, Extensis Suitcase 11 does not work under Panther and Panther's
Font Book utility is a joke for anyoone with a serious font collection.
No word from Extensis as to when (or if) they will issue an update.

It's a shame Microsoft refused to fork over license fees in the early
days and caused the situation of incompatibility between fonts ...
never had font problems with a mac. Only run suitcase because I'm used
to it from the days when you could only load a few fonts at a time due
to incompatibility issues. The service providers I work with would
much rather deal with font issues on a mac than windows ...

My info comes in the form of a quote from an Extensis Representative as
follows:
"The following is from Extensis Tech Support. There is currently no
information about this on their web site.

Greetings:
Suitcase 10 is not compatible with Panther.
Currently Suitcase X1 is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.3 either. Both
Extensis and Apple are aware of this issue, and are currently working
to resolve the problem. I have no information as to when a patch to
resolve this will be available, although it should be relatively soon.
Please check the Extensis website for any updates regarding Suitcase X1
and Mac OS X 10.3. "
For the record, I have heard the phrase "relatively soon" from this
company in the past and it usually means weeks to months.

Perhaps not on some systems. I run a 557 or thereabouts power book
running suitcase 10 with no problems, and a dual processor G4 with
suitcase 11. Did an upgrade from Jaguar to Panther and everything
works fine. I had auto activation running for Illustrator which caused
a crash but I trashed my suitcase preferences and restarted and all is
well. I don't normally run auto activation but had it on in
Illustrator for some reason. Guess I just live right then. Hopefully
my computers don't hear that they aren't supposed to be working ...

I can only comment on my own experiences after upgrading to Panther. I
couldn't get Suitcase 10.2.2 to work after I installed Panther and had
to quickly upgrade to the demo version of X1. Everything works fine
with the exception of adding font suitcases. If I click the "Add"
button all suitcases are grayed out. However, i can drag font
suitcases into the "Current Fonts, et. al." window and activate them
from there. I also received an email from Extensis support to the
effect that they did not currently support Panther. My question was
"Why not? You've known about this for months. What's up with that and
why are you dragging your feet? The only other issue I've had with
Suitcase was the inability to install Sticky Brain when it became
available on mac.com. I had to quit Suitcase 10.2.2 in order to get
Sticky Brain installed. Chronos nor Extensis had an answer for that
one. Oh, by the way - do not activate "File Vault" in Panther. That
doesn't work either.
