PING: Pepe (or other PC hardware gurus!)

Pepe,

Is there any chance you could help me with the following please?

I'm wanting to upgrade the Ram in my PC as I've mentioned to you before.

Motherboard has 3 slots, 1 currently taken by 512Mb DDR PC2100 266Mhz - I
actually took the side of the box off as you suggested to find this out!!

I remember from way back that RAM should be installed in equal pairs but
with my motherboard having 3 slots its obviously not the case anymore (or am
I worng?)

I've can get 2 x 256 DDR PC2100 266Mhz at a good price to fill the other two
slots (works out cheaper than 1 stick of 512)

Its been a while since I upgraded anything so am out of touch. I guess
really I have the following questions.

1: Do I have to install RAM in pairs?
2: Does the new RAM have to be PC2100 266Mhz or will any DDR do?
3: Are there any problems you can see with buying the 2 x 256mb sticks?

If it makes a difference at all my processor is a P4 2.24Ghz

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

No, unless the MB calls for it.

No. But any faster ram will only run at PC2100 speeds

No problems with that.

Nope.

Sure...you are best off using the same brand RAM, although that's not
necessary. You might not be up for it, but a MB swap to something newer can
make a HUGE difference. If you have any other questions just shoot.

Thanks Josh,

Cheapest I could get 1 x 512 at was £65 brand new and £50 through eBay -
that was all non ECC

Managed to get 2 x 256 with ECC for £40 off eBay so I'll see what
improvement this makes.

motherboard.

you've got now.
those... but if you post the motherboard's make and model, I can tell you
for sure.

least the same type (PC2100).

troubleshoot. Go the safer way.

Hey Pepe, the next Moretti's on me!

I've actually ordered the 2 256mb sticks. They're both identical so I'm
hoping I shouldn't have too many problems.

On newer boards, it makes a HUGE perfomance difference (100% faster RAM
access)...

Well... if his CPU is HyperThreaded, then it's likely the motherboard uses
dual bank ram... which means if you use a match pair of high-speed ram you
get double the performance (the computer and read and write to both banks
at the same time)... even if you leave the 3rd slot free. If you then stick
ram in the 3rd slot, everything drops back down to single speed...

No chance of Hyperthreading here I'm afraid - still on my student budget!

I am a PC technician and am willing to help you out.

First off knowing what motherboard you have usually printed right on
the board name and manufacturer will help me know what the
specification of the motherboard and chipset are.

Secondly what kind of Pentium4 Processor ? Will make a
differencebecuase of the chipset and ram requitements

With this information I can give you a beter idea.

FYI there are many types of ram and depending on the type they can de
installed singly or in pairs.

if its plain DDR then singles, If its a Dual Channel Motherboard then
for best perfomance matched Pairs, it its RIMMS then you need matched
pairs. andif it SDRAM then you ony need single chips.
