Please advise!

Hi,

I'm a designer (websites, print, photos, Illustrator, etc.)

I'm thinking of buying a new Mac. At first my eyes were on the new 20"
iMac but I had reservations about the LCD monitor (heard it wasn't that
great when it comes to color correcting, working with photos in
Photoshop, etc.) so I thought I'd buy a G5 and get a 22" CRT monitor.

But the 20" iMac is so nice and most of all MUCH cheaper than what I
would spend if I bought the G5 and a monitor. $2000 compared to around
$3500-$4200. And I'm the kind of guy who would have to buy the 2.0 G5. I
just can't bring myself to buy something slower when I know there is
something faster out there.

I have an older Blue 15" iMac already and I need more screen space,
maybe I could do the color correcting and stuff on the smaller iMac and
do everything else on the 20" iMac? Network them together and swap files.

Or, is what I heard about the LCD monitors wrong?

Thanks for any advice
Steve

LCD monitors are getting a lot better, but the Mac ones are fairly middling
from my experience. I bought a 21" ViewSonic flat panel TFT for my PC and
it's a lot clearer than any of the Mac ones I've seen. Colour can be a
problem, but it really depends what you're working for. If you're working
for the web, it's not a big deal (the colours are close enough), but if you
are mostly working for print you *must* get a really good display (like the
ViewSonic). Most of the old arguments against TFT panels (poor refresh
rates, middling resolution, far to strong contrast and vivid colours, poor
viewing angle, shadowing etc) just aren't apparent with the new high-end
TFTs.

We have two 19" CRTs in this office too, and the flat panel is *easily* the
best quality display.
