Portfolio Design
Posted by MrsBeebleBrock on December 18th, 2003

Hi, I'm designing a "portfolio" to be printed, and it'll feature
brochures, book cover designs and other print material we've done for
clients.

I've not seen very many other designers' portfolios, other than those
that contain actual hard copies of the client material, and am trying to
think of a way to depict brochures and books interestingly in 2D so that
they are still vaguely legible. I don't want to lay up all pages
obciously - just a selection.

What have others done in this situation?

Thanks in advance for any inspiration ...

Jo

Look at the top design annuals for inspiration; New York's One Show, CA
Annuals, Print Regional Annuals. There you get the beauty shots, essence of
the pieces and pertinent information without wading through all the pages.

Dan, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately in this wee corner of New
Zealand we don't have access to those items, and a Google search didn't
bring up much of use when I typed in New York One Show or CA Annuals.
Can you suggest weblinks for these or your other references?

Regards,
Jo

New Zealand, eh? I understand the streets are paved with Hobbits over there
:-)

The 25th One Show volume is just out. Here is a link to their site; only
shows the cover, but the winners are consistently the cream d'la creme of
the ad world. This may get you closer to a source in your country so you can
a least get a look at it.

"CA" refers to Communication Arts Magazine; a designer staple:

Again, no interior layout shots, but you should be able to find a CA (This
year's December Advertising Annual is just out) at major bookstores.

Finally, the Print Regional Design Annuals are a good cross-section of the
day-to-day state of design. Not as selective as the first two with a more
quantity over quality philosophy, but they are a good example of how to
successfully cram as many separate projects onto a page as possible while
still looking halfway decent.

Good luck with your layout, hope these help!

If you don't want the expense of photography, save sample pages from Quark or
Illustrator as eps, open in Photoshop, and distortions and shadows to make 3D,
overlap cover and spread, etc.

Hi Dan, thanks for the links. Hopefully something inspirational will
jump out at me.

Cheers,

Hi JT, I've found the Crease function in Dreamsuite 1 does a really good
job of making a double-page brochure spread look exactly like a well ...
a double-page brochure spread. Nice 3d effect indeed.

Cheers,
Jo
