One of my all time favorite movies is Wings of Desire. The remake a few
years ago, City of Angels, just about made me sick to my stomach it was so
bad. Take a beautiful piece of art and let Hollywood slaughter it. Almost
any movie directed by Wim Wenders would rate high on my scale.
I tend to follow directors -- other directors that you pretty much can't go
wrong with (at least their movies will be visually interesting if nothing
else):
Any movie directed by Terry Gilliam (pretty much ties for first place with
Wim Wenders)
Honorable mentions go to:
Tim Burton (see Edward Scissorhands)
Peter Greenaway (see Prosperos Books -- very bizarre but visually
intriguing)
Baz Lurman (see Strictly Ballroom)

I wholeheartedly agree with you there. WINGS OF DESIRE is one of hte
best films I have ever seen. CITY of ANGELS was a disappointing piece
of Hollywood Dreck. What a waste of time, talent and money.
I need to get out and see Christopher Guest's A MIGHTY WIND. I loved
WAITING FOR GUFFMAN and BEST IN SHOW.
I just saw a gorgeous animated silent film on Turner Classic Movies,
THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED (1927). I highly reccommend that.
It's available on video and DVD.

Unfortunately, for anyone (or at least for myself) who has first fallen in
love with the delicate beauty, spirituality and complexity of Wings of
Desire -- City of Angels was artistic sacrilege. City of Angels seemed to me
a story about a fallen Angel wanting to get in Meg Ryans pants. Where-as
Wings of Desire is about an Angel who chooses to become mortal (knowing
full-well that there is not turning back -- risking everything it means to
be an Angel) in order to explore the mysteries of mortality, love, pain and
joy.
If you did not enjoy Wings of Desire before seeing City of Angels I am
afraid that you'll probably never be able to understand my outrage -- and I
apologize for my emotional reaction.
Oh and BTW -- add to my list of worthwhile/interesting movies -- any movie
done by Ethan and Joel Coen.

Joanne... if you were disappointed in the drekky flick "City of Angels" I
recommend the movie it was based on a multi-lingual, foreign film, "Far
Away So Close"..... Beside the great visuals the sound track is wonderful.
The story drags in a few spots but it's definitely worth a look.
with warm regards,
Tony

Tony,
Thanks for the reccommendation. We've got a very good idependent video
rental shop in town. They have a great foreign selection; I'll bet
they'll have it.
