- response to some of the t-shirt comments
- Posted by vickie on April 24th, 2008
Hi. I'm new to the group. I was reading a couple of the comments
from quite awhile back about the problems with iron-on t-shirts. Well
for the past 10+ years my husband and I have been selling our own
designed t-shirts with iron-on designs. If someone in the group has
any questions on the processes, quality, etc. please feel free to
comment on the group forum and I will be glad to answer any
questions. You can also e-mail me directly and I will answer any
questions. You can also check out our store on ebay for some shirt
designs among other items we have for sale. I don't know that we're
allowed to advertise on here. I was on another group (another search
engine's group) and we were not allowed to even mention that we had
items for sale. So if anyone has any questions, please email me or
leave messages on this forum and I'll be glad to get back with you.
Thanks.

You are communicating in a Usenet newsgroup. It is open to anyone, and any
topic. You can type messages about your shirts or what you have printed on
your underwear. There are no "moderators" here. There is also no way to
make people respond to your message in the way you want... anyone can do
anything they want here.

Thanks for offering your input. I've had fading issues after several
washings and my wife wants to make dish towels to resell using heat
transfers. Can it be absorbent and is there a brand of iron on material
you recommend?
TIA

I'm not Vickie, obviously, but have you or your wife thought about setting
up your own screenprinting set up? From what you've said before, ya'll have
everything but the kitchen sink going for your wife's antique biz, so why
not this?
I've got one, and it was REALLY easy to set up -- and cheaper than you
think. Screenprint inks last MUCH longer and are MUCH more vibrant than
iron-on transfers (take it from someone who is obsessed with ALL things
fabric -- and that includes textile art!!).
Holler at me if you want more info -- I've even printed my own large format
fabric on a screen print press!! Easy Peasy!! And still as vibrant as the
day I did it, even after oodles of washings!!

Yeah, true ... I use CafePress, too.
But they can't do large runs of fabric (for quilting -- joke as you like,
I've heard'em all) and they don't use vintage materials (which is what
Drew's talking about -- his wife restores and deals antiques, and probably
has a very cool stash of vintage fabrics because of it!! *drool*).
He was talking about her putting designs on dishtowels and such, and
CafePress doesn't do that. Yet. I'm honestly waiting for them to custom
print gift wrap and fabric yardage. Now, THAT would be sweet!!!
Now, if you have ANY sources to do any of that, I gotta say, I would LOVE to
hear about it. Screenprinting fabric yardage STINKS. Lotsa work, lotsa time,
little room for error.

You guys are going about this all wrong. Just use an online service
like nyah:
http://www.cafepress.com/
or nyah:
http://www.zazzle.com
The shirts come out REALLY nice, they use high end, industrial type
machines to make them, so they're professional level and don't fade or
peel like do it yourself kits and iron ons. The prices are REALLY
reasonable, there's tons of selection as far as the type of clothing
to use it on and with like cafepress you can even sell your t-shirt
designs to other people through their site.

Thanks Connie. I had totally forgotten screen printing of which I'm very
familiar. Got one of my minors at App in Serigraphy and continued as a
hobby for a few years later. Yes, I will contact you concerning burning
the screens. I'm sure there's a better way now than then.
Toodles!

Hmm ... it's no different than you'd have done, I wouldn't think. I think
the inks ('specially for fabric) are brighter and more stable/durable, but
other than that ...
You might be interested, for small projects (I think the active area is
something like 8x6?), in the Print Gocco system ... it's easier, quicker,
cleaner, etc ... just no real wiggle room in terms of how big you can do
(you're limited by the "box"). Another disadvantage is that the system is
pricey and hard to find ...
http://www.gocco.com/prod.HTM
(they don't sell the kits through the website, you have to find it online at
a dealer or see if there's a store local to you)
But if you can find one and want to make the investment, it's LOADS of fun,
and SO much easier than traditional ... and MUCH cleaner, too!! Instead of
having to have a complete "set-up" of screens, a huge sink, etc, you can do
it in a bathroom in about 2 hours!!
Hugs!!!

Thanks C, that looks like an interesting product. The 8x6 though would
be too limiting for our efforts. Our garage has a utility sink and if I
can every get the furniture/saws/lumber out of there for a little while,
I'll have a place to work. This'll be fun!
