- semi-OT: drive setup
- Posted by inez on March 11th, 2008
I still haven't initialized the additional internal drive. I bought it
as a dedicated scratch disk. Do I allow Mac's Disk Utility to RAID
it?...and if so, what setup? I'm mostly clueless on RAID.
Also, I bought a 500GB external drive for files and backup; any
recommendations on partitioning or anything?

No need to RAID it. Just let OS X initialise it, and then make it the
primary scratch inside PhotoShop.
The external drive... well you don't need to do much. Our external
backup drive just has a few root folders (/photos /projects /
userfiles) and we use deja to schedule file copies from our other
volumes daily / weekly. I wouldn't chop up the disk into smaller
volumes as you'll only end up making one to small, or one to big etc
etc.
In OSX you can create mountable volume files - just a big file that
pretends to be a disk. You can use these to create little secure areas
of files that are protected - you can even back up these file images
in one lump, rather than the files contained inside them. We do this
for storing sensitive material.
So... forget RAID

I'll
ask Help about volume files. Problem is, I want/need to learn everything
all at once and asap.
Got Quark all loaded up; vastly different. Waiting on a book for that
too, and sent for their manual. BUT, they did include a lynda.com
training CD so I'll be spending time with that.
Just followed a link to a print relevant article:

I do hope Adobe OTFs are better than their old postscript fonts. They've
always seemed overpriced to me.
As you can tell, my mind is going in all directions at once. LOL!
BTW, when I used to hit the enter key (not the return key) it would
enter/submit/send; now it just seems to return. What's up with that?

I don't use the number pad enter key! Well apart from for macros in

I've never really had any issues with fonts in OS X. To be honest, I
pretty much carry my fonts around with me on a memory stick (is that
really sad?) and when I got my new Macs I just copied the font files
into /user/miranda/library/fonts/ and they just worked. A real mix of
old Windows TTFs and OTFs and the Adobe fontpacks I've hoarded over
the years. I don't do much print work, but not had any real issues.
I've got around 1000 active fonts.
OTF is a much better format than the old PS fonts; they render nice
and quickly and Illustrator seems to like them better from what I've
found.
Catch me on IM if you need any help in OSX. I can fire up iChat or
something.

Yeah. I had to do some household stuff. Haven't been sleeping well at

drowsed with the TV on. Now I have to jump to and make a late night
visit to WalMart so the critters have food and litter. Ugh!
Maybe catch you tomorrow.
