slightly OT - HDV camcorders

Just received my Canon HV10... gorgeous high-def camcorder (HDV) to take
to Japan with us in a few weeks. The video coming from it is amazing,
and it's a TINY little camera... 1/3rd the size of our old one, and
about a 8th the size of the Sony one in our studio. Yummy. If you're
looking to switch to HD videoing, this one is very good and not to dear
(around £600 / $1200 from Amazon). The newer version of it is out now
too (HV20) that is also very delicious, but was and extra £200... which
I can't justify for a "b" camera / personal camera.

Anyone in here do much video work?

I don't do much video, but work in a department with an affiliation to the
video department. We work closely with them, especially in terms of video on
the web.

I liked what I saw when looking up the camera. Pricing here in the states
must be more competitive, I'm seeing prices for the camera below $800 US.

I am especially interested in the fact that the sensor isn't a CCD, but a
CMOS sensor. This may bring the price way donw for HD video if this becomes
an alternative.

Good luck on your trip. My daughter loved Japan, even though there was an
earthquake as soon as they got off the plane. She was lucky enough to do a
home stay for part of her trip with a Buddist priest and family and truly
got a sense of the culture. It is something that she'll never forget. May
you enjoy your time as mcuh as she did.

I believe we just picked up a Sony HDV HD HVR-V1 or an X1.... cant
remember. the cheaper one...

I do a lot of video work... Haven't shot all that much, I am mostly
working with the footage after it gets captured, doing the vfx work
and whatnot.

We were looking at the HV20... but it just wasnt going to shoot what
we need it to for a professional quality. It is an awesome price
though. That seems like a nice high end personal camera.

I cant wait till the Red camera releases... That is going to be a very
fun time. $17,500 for a camera that will shoot Star Wars quality
resolution. Very approachable... the Sony equivalent is $250,000.

All I have at home is an old DV camera and a little Mini DV camera.
Terrible quality, lol. They worked for student projects though.

$1,299 is the LIST PRICE, the SELLING PRICE, on Amazon is only $768.73
with free shipping...well, on the US Amazon site anyway. Maybe they
make you Eurokids pay more?

Really though, if you were going to spend THAT much anyway, why didn't
you just go one step further and get a Canon XL2? Really you just cut
yourself short to save a few hundred bucks...which isn't much
considering the overall investment.

Sadly, this being Europe, we pay a LOT more for technology. Roughly
double. Can't use the US version as that is NTSC which is a lower
quality format. So I had to buy here. Apple sell the same camera here
for £200 more! Amazon was the cheapest I found after a week of hunting
around.

Because this is a "B" camera. We have a $4000 Sony in the studio (I
forget the model), but I needed something that I could slip in my bag
and was a better size for my hand. I need a camera that is very easy
to carry around.

I have the HV10 on my desk next to me right now and it is PERFECT for
me, and to be honest, looking at the footage I shot an hour ago, I
think it may be a little better than the expensive Sony. It's perfect
for girly hands but really cramped for big man hands, my boss got hand
cramp within minutes of trying it!

Anyway, I'm taking this one to Japan, leaving the Sony at the studio.

I'm doing more and more video work, having been plunged into the deep

like little DVDs of material too I find. It's a lot of fun.

The European price on most technology like this is seriously high...
it's really unfair. Sadly with AV stuff, you're kinda stuck as we have
different formats (PAL, SECAM) than the rest of the world, so I simply
can't pick one up when I'm in the US (or Japan for that matter)

The image quality from it (stills) is shockingly good considering it's
a video camera. The HDV from it is astounding. I really wasn't
expecting anything even close to the expensive Sony we have at the
studio, but I actually think this is better! We'll see... only played
with it for a few hours.

Hope I don't get to see one of those there!

First 10 days we're in a beautiful looking ryokan in Kyoto. We're
their first ever Western visitors, so I think my very broken Japanese
is going to be... essential. We booked by email, in Japanese, as none
of the staff could (or were willing to) speak/write in English. Should
be... interesting!

Then we're off to Tokyo for the rest of the month.

Thanks Fred

Um...no, not really.

PAL may have a higher SPATIAL RESOLUTION than NTSC but NTSC has a
higher TEMPORAL RESOLUTION than PAL. Further, because the DVD (and
other formats) rely on lossy compression, well the longer the content
the higher the compression ratio needs to be and the more likely it is
that you'll wind up with notable artifacting. If an additional 20% of
SPATIAL RESOLUTION needs to be compressed then it'll likely result in
a LESSER QUALITY IMAGE...which is why PAL movies are often done on
dual layer discs and also why they often cost more than their NTSC
counterparts.

Generally, on the whole, PAL content will look best on PAL systems and
NTSC content will look best on NTSC systems...however the latter are
ALWAYS cheaper. A LOT of Euro based productions companies actually
USE NTSC and then port/convert to PAL afterwards since it saves them
so much money on equipment costs.

This is true; given Japan is also NTSC and this is where most of this
technology is designed. Also, PAL and NTSC have slightly different
colour spaces I think. It's a real pain to be honest - I'm not stuck on
any format, but it would be very handy if it was the same format
everywhere! Still, as I work mostly for the web, it doesn't matter THAT
much and conversion either way is fairly simple these days.

Keep a copy of the receipt and consider registering the camera with customs.
Not point in paying duty/tax on what's imported a second time.' BTDT

In Tokyo Jinglish is common enough that you won't have a problem. Be
prepared for school kids to come up and want to speak English to practice.

Any effort to speak Japanese is apparently appreciated and rewarded with
consideration. (They try not to laugh but sometimes the grammar/vocabulary
will bring a grin regardless. I had a problem with the pronunciation of NO
SMOKING which some how came out marriage. So requesting a NO SMOKING room
(not even in the concept stage when I first visited) received some odd looks
and a smile.

You're going to love it!!!
