- web navigation interfaces
- Posted by Matt Bostock on April 6th, 2004
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to decide; what's better:
1) a page with many links organised neatly to provide one-click access to
most of the site
2) a page only four links which leads down into a second level of links, in
a structured hierarchy, keeping the page more clean
....for an ecommerce site?
Thanks,
Matt

Option 2, with a sitemap page that acts as option 1

My approach has been not to have a 'slam-dunk' solution for every site, but
to find out the needs of my client are and what he wants his site to
accomplish. After that you can determine what the best navigation for your
client's site might be.

Id suggest making your home page a portal into the site giving access to
relevant sub topics (articles) of content which can also be accessed from a
2 tiered menu system i.e. the home page links to the latest case study which
is also accessible form a "case study" menu which links to a page showing
all youer case studies.

Option One, always have the complete website navigable from any page, you
should always be able to get from Page A to Page Z, without having to go to
Page M if you catch my drift ... it's stood me in good stead over the years.
IMHO that is

After you make the crossover into ssl its not wise to confuse the man
with the chainsaw.

I agree with that. But then it's a compromise between a cluttered interface
and useability. Once again it's design V functionality

The client is me, I'm redesigning my hosting site and
support/billing/control systems... a *big* overhaul. I need to get this
right.

That's a nice approach... kinda like 'featured links'?

Thanks John, another opinion to swing the vote
I think I'll compromise
half-way with Mark's solution.
