Can anyone explain to me how to install Familiar/Opie in plan english
Posted by Bushido Hacks on May 17th, 2004

OK, here's the problem. I've been browsing Handhelds.org for nearly a
month now and can't get a straight answer as to how to install
Linux/Familiar/GPE/Opie on to my PocketPC so I could get rid of
Microsoft Windows for PocketPC 2002/2003.

I have downloaded bootldr but don't know how to use it.

I've already backed up my information and made images of the files on
the device.

I am at the point where I can hold down the joypad on my HP h5455 and
press the restart button at the same time.

When I do this, the device vibrates for a short time and the screen in
standstill as expected.

However, when I release the buttons, redock (the dock is plugged into
the serial port, the short female port in the back (holes=female,
prongs=male)), and press the calendar button, nothing happens. So I
try using the Hyperterminal, which I have no clue as to how to use
even though the settings.

Cygwin is installed, I can't install Linux. WindowsXP Home is
installed on the computer.
PDA has SD port. Though I have a CF/extended battery pack accessory,
I have nothing that can read a CF device outside of the PDA.

So I restart try this process again and still nothing happens.

What is wrong? (Note: This is not a PEBKAC problem)
Is the serial port COM1 or COM3? If the terminal is suppost to say
serial port, why is this not listed?
How do I use HyperTerminal? (That's an important question)
And can somebody PLEASE tell me how to install Linux in plan english
on my PDA?! (This is a really important question.)

Hi!

There's a mailinglist available under www.handhelds.org.

I don't know if your ipaq is supported by handhelds.org, but if so you may
follow the instructions from
http://familiar.handhelds.org/releas...ctivesync.html
*on your own risk*:

1. InstallBootblaster and bootldr to the device, using ActiveSync
2. Execute bootblaster on ipaq
3. Tap Flash-Save bootldr to backup the old one
4. Tap Flash-Save Wince to backup old system
5. Copy the created files to your desktop
6. Tap Flash-Programm, select the fitting bootldr and wait. A sort of timer
should appear.
7. Verify with Flash-Verify

Reset the device while holding down the joypad. The handhelds bootloader
should appear. Try to boot WinCE (not sure which button you'll have to
press). If anything is fine proceed to install opie or GPE.

Then you need a serial line to the ipaq. The COM-Port depends on your
desktop hardware, modern PCs only have COM1. But it's simple: start
hyperterminal, set it to the settings described in point 3 on
http://familiar.handhelds.org/releas...ll-serial.html
and open the connection, while the ipaq shows the bootscreen.

New press Calendar button. On hyperterminal you should see a command prompt
like "boot>". Proceed with flashing as described on handhelds.org.

Good luck, and welcome on familiar ;-)

Greetings, Michael.

P.S.: Please, if you're crossposting to several groups, set a follow-up.
Thanks.
